With the announcement of the pending AT&T and BellSouth merger...Cingular Wireless will be known as AT&T Wireless sometime in 2007-2008.

So let's recap what has happened since AT&T was disolved by the government in January 1984...

AT&T breaks up into:

Ameritech ... (now part of AT&T)
Bell Atlantic ... (now part of Verizon)
BellSouth Corporation ... (now part of AT&T, pending merger approval)
NYNEX ... (now part of Verizon)
Pacific Telesis Group ... (now part of AT&T)
Southwestern Bell Corporation ... (now part of AT&T)
US West ... (now part of Qwest)


Shortly after...the wireless world developed and the following wireless companies were created

Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems
AT&T Wireless
BellSouth Wireless
Verizon Wireless

In 1999 or 2000, Southwestern Bell and BellSouth merged their wireless companies to create one company...Cingular Wireless.

SWBell was 60% owner and BellSouth was a 40% owner.

Some time after that, SWBell decided to change it's name to SBC.

In Nov 2004, SBC and BellSouth decided to purchase AT&T Wireless...the wireless spin off from AT&T.

In 2005, SBC and AT&T merged to form "the new AT&T."

Today it was announced that BellSouth would be merging with "the new AT&T" to create an even bigger conglomerate company. As a result, Cingular's owners (BellSouth and "the new AT&T), have decided to now change the name of Cingular to AT&T Wireless...a company that was originally bought by Cingular 18 months before today.

Yep, I kinda knew all of that somewhere in the back of my brain. But I just never sat down and tried to work it all out.
Now, I sure am glade I never did.

Hey Addidas410, do you need a bottle of aspiren after all that? I need a couple just after reading it.

I wonder if I'll have to "enroll" with AT&T like I had to with Cingular even though I was a SW Bell wireless customer...:thinking:

I hope not...that was frustrating.:rolleyes:

I doubt they make you do anything along those lines as that was back in 1999...the wireless world has changed A LOT since then!

so let me get this straight...

AT&T was the original single telephone company.. then the government splt them up.

Along comes the wireless branch with the split. Now AT&T used to be one of five major wireless carriers. Then they combine with one of the split ups... then another split up. And as a result they are now one of three major carriers which includes:
AT&T Wireless
Sprint/Nextel
Verizon Wireless

Whats next? AT&T aka the current Bell spin-offs purrchase Sprint and Verizon?

remember that Verizon is a combination of NYNEX (a baby bell) and MCI...which was #2 to AT&T before all the splits

yeah....I have to work until 730 PM tonight...that and basketball isn't my strong suit. I am going to check with a few guys that are good with kids and know basketball better than I do...I'll get back to you if I find somebody.

OH and also will the SBC center now become the SBC New ATT Verison center....its almost getting as bad as Nascar.....the Dupont-Citgo-everready-Delco-Viagra car did really well today.. to bad it blew a cylinder in the 1st lap:D

I have a cingular family plan, but as 3afan said, I guess I don't care either as long as the phone still works.;)
