Aggies Win Series with 1-0 Decision over Gators
For Immediate Release
Sunday, March 5, 2006

GAINESVILLE, Fla.- Austin Creps, Matt Ueckert and Jordan Chambless combined for a shutout on Sunday and No. 29 Texas A&M made a second-inning run hold up as the Aggies defeated No. 5 Florida, 1-0, at McKethan Stadium.

Creps (2-1) did not allow a runner to reach second base until the eighth inning and faced just one man over the minimum through the first seven frames. He struck out five and did not walk a man in 7 1/3 innings of mound work.

With the win the Aggies won two games of the three-game series and improved to 13-2, while Florida dropped to 9-6.

“I am very proud of this team in that we came on the road and took two of three games from the No. 5 team in the country,” said head coach Rob Childress. “Creps was outstanding today and his sinker was working well for him. Matt Ueckert did his job getting the out in the eighth and Chambless shut the door.”

Florida threatened in the bottom of the eighth. Austin Pride was hit by a pitch and Brian Jeroloman reached on an error. After Creps got Cody Neer to fly out to shallow right, Ueckert coaxed pinch hitter David Cash to fly out to center. Chambless then took the mound and got the third straight fly out to end the inning and the threat.

Chambless pitched a perfect ninth to earn his third save of the season.

A&M took the lead with an unearned run off Florida starter Kris Gawriluk in the top of the second. With one out, Adam Hale singled up the middle and Josh Stinson walked. After John Infante reached on an error to load the bases, Grawriluk hit Blake Stouffer with a 1-2 pitch to force home Hale.

A&M had its chances to blow the game open in the early going as they left eight men on base in the first four innings, including leaving the bases loaded in the second and fourth innings.

“We are struggling right now offensively,” Childress said. “We have good offensive players and we just need to go to work and get better. Our guys need to stick with it and keep working hard. It is a good feeling to know that we are 13-2 and our better days are still ahead.”

The Aggies finished the game going 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Grawriluk (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing the only run of the game on three hits.

The Aggies return to action this Tuesday, March 6, when they travel to Dell Diamond for a midweek game against Texas State. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Dell Diamond.

It is a good win for the Aggies and does show they cannot be taken lightly.
