What a shame...funny guy.

LOS ANGELES - Don Knotts, the skinny, lovable nerd who kept generations of television audiences laughing as bumbling Deputy Barney Fife on “The Andy Griffith Show,” has died. He was 81.

Knotts died Friday night of pulmonary and respiratory complications at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills, said Paul Ward, a spokesman for the cable network TV Land, which airs “The Andy Griffith Show,” and another Knotts hit, “Three’s Company.”

Unspecified health problems had forced him to cancel an appearance in his native Morgantown, W.Va., in August 2005.

Really sad news. He made a lot of people happy with his humor. Wish there were more like him.

Just think, now John Ritter, Don Knotts and both the Ropers are dead now!

what was the name of a movie he was in where he played a dolphin. I think he fell off a ship and was the voice of an animated dolphin. Was I drunk or was this a real movie?

Aussie,
To tell you the truth, I stayed up for two nights trying to catch your illustrious (sp) 1500, and I finally fell out of my chair at your supreme moment of posting.

It's just like me to fall asleep like that at crucial moments....

Congrats...and Gig 'em.

andHe was great in lots of tv shows as a guest star and in many movies. He only left the Andy Griffith because he had an opportunity and he thought Andy was going to stop the series after 5 years but Andy did three more years and Knotts allways said he would have stayed if he had known it was going to be on for three more years.

Some great movies were (and some have already been mentioned)

The Incredible Mr. Limpet 1964
The Ghost and Mr. Chicken 1966
The Reluctant Astronaught 1967
The Shakiest Gun in the West 1968

A couple of very funny movies that he appeared in for only about five minutes but he was the funniest one in them were

No Time For Sergents 1958 Movie with Andy Griffith and Nick Adams. This movie mainly was to introduce Griffith as a very funny actor which it did but Don Knotts stole the show with his five minute part and this movie is great and worth seeing anyway but even if it weren't it would be worth watching to see Knotts' very funny five minute part.

Move over Darling 1963 One of the funny movies that Doris Day and James Garner which also had Thelma Ritter. Knotts is great in the five minute part as the shoe clerk.

Also passing this week is Darren McGavin, who was in many movies, but is most recognized as Ralpies grouchy dad in the holiday classic "A Christmas Story". He was 83....
