Viola steps down as head of Islanders' athletics
By staff reports
February 24, 2006

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi athletic director Dan Viola announced to his staff that he resigned at a 2 p.m. staff meeting on Friday.

Viola was named the first Director of Athletics at Texas A&M-CC on May 19, 1997. He was charged with developing a five-year plan to take the non-existent athletic program and turn it into an NCAA Division I athletic department.

The Islanders attained full Division I status in the 2002-03 academic year.

Viola has also helped find a permanent home for the athletic program in the Southland Conference. Texas A&M-CC accepted an invitation to join the athletic league in the 2006-07 academic year.

A native of Burbank, Calif., Viola received a bachelor's degree in education from Weber State in 1975 and a master's in educational administration from Texas-El Paso in 1978. Prior to his position with Texas A&M-CC, Viola worked at UTEP and Wyoming.
