Eagles advance

Deep Fairfield roster too up-tempo for Waco Robinson
Joel Snowden Special to the Daily Sun

ITALY — The Fairfield Eagles shot down the Waco Robinson Rockets tonight in a Region III-3A Bi-district contest to the fine tune of 93-52, improving to 28-5 on the year and moving on to the area round of the playoffs.

The Eagles came in with a smothering man-to-man pressure defense and a run-and-gun first quarter offensive outburst to bury the Rockets in the first quarter by a 30-11 margin. They would never look back from this point on.

The Eagles started out the first period by running out to a 13-5 lead off the hot hand of junior guard Billy McMillian, unloading two 3-point shots to quiet the Robinson faithful and cause the Rockets to call timeout at the 4:33 mark of the first.

The Eagles proved too quick and too powerful on both ends of the boards, outrebounding Waco 43-26. Chase Gillian, Phillip Ireland and Jarrett Manning controlled the boards combining for 21 of the 43 rebounds against Robinson. The Eagles also stole the ball away from the Rockets 11-1 and forced 23 turnovers.

Not only was Fairfield’s defense a sight to see, the offense was blistering hot on the night, especially from the 3-point arc. The Eagles were 8 of 14 from the 3-point line, led by Billy McMillan’s three 3-pointers to finish with 11 points on the night. Asa Douglas and Jarrett Manning had two threes apiece to finish their scoring nights with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The Eagles had four of their five starters to score in double figures. McMillian finished with 11, Nolan Melontree had 14, Alfraid Manning had 14 while cousin Jarrett Manning rounded out the twin-digit scoring with 11.

The Eagles’ bench came up big also in the scoring onslaught, scoring 37 of their 93 points. Douglas was the Eagles’ sixth man off the bench, leading the deep roster of the hot Eagle team.

The Rockets were led by Preston Goins’ 24 points.

He scored 11 in the final stanza after the Eagles held him in check through the first three quarters.

Fairfield advances to the area round for a rematch with Manor Friday, with a site and time to be determined. Manor defeated Fairfield, 67-58, in area round play last season.
