Good catch. There were several times during football season that both names were used for Columbia High School. It took me awhile to figure that out. Makes me wonder if Columbia/West Columbia votes were split--which might would make them a Top 5 team if the votes were combined?

Snyder_TigerFan

That seems like something they should have caught. Takes some of the credibility away from the magazine, IMO.

I emailed THSBM about the discrepancy. Got a note back that they had already been notified. They just came out with the correction: Columbia moves to #3 and Perryton moves into the #25 spot.

Compare the two pre-season polls:

THSB Coaches Association
1. Bridge City
2. Lufkin Hudson
3. Jasper
4. Lindale
5. Bullard
6. Columbus
7. Columbia
8. Lorena
9. Huffman Hargrave
10.Kennedale

THSB Magazine
1. Lindale
2. Sinton
3. Columbia
4. Carthage
5. Lufkin Hudson
6. Bridge City
7. Falfurrias
8. Bullard
9. Abilene Wylie
10.Snyder

Both polls see Lindale, Bridge City, Lufkin Hudson, Bullard, & Columbia as Top 10 teams.

Last year, I believe these two polls worked together but now they do their polls separately. Does the AP do a baseball poll?

depends on who we are playing, if we play someone around here, they call us Columbia, but when we get to the playoffs they always call us West Columbia.

the high school is called Columbia High School, but it is located in West Columbia, so when we get to the playoffs, we are always listed as West Columbia Columbia, so they just call us West Columbia.

Whether 1st, 5th or 6th, it doesn't matter. I really feel that BC has one of the best pitching rotations in the state. I'm a homer, I know, but it would be a major upset if BC doesn't make it back to the show in Austin again this year.

I know you have Angelle (sp?), maybe the best 3A pitcher this year. What about the rest of the rotation?

Brock Hamon Left hander was out last year due to Tommy John surgery. Is back and is strong. 88-90 fast ball, good off speed and one heck of a breaking ball.

Jeff Stringer Left hander mid eighties on the fast ball, but once again good off speed, and curve.

Johnny Dishon Right hander. Not sure about being in the rotation, but he has been throwing in scrimmages. Fast ball 90 to 91. Has had trouble hitting the target, but has gotten better over the past year.

Phillip Meeks Right hander. Low eighties, great command of three pitches. Phillip has great potential hasn't pitched on varsity yet because of resposibilities in the classroom.

So the one two three is: Angelle, Hamon, Stringer. These three have great control, and all three are capable of pitching light out. Angelle opened the season with 7 k's and 1 hit in a 10 to 0 win after 5 innings Tuesday.

Surprised we're ranked as high as 16. Didn't think we would get much pub after a 2nd round washout last year. We are still pretty young but have good depth and chemistry. I think the next few weeks will tell a lot, the Frenship and Snyder tournaments should be great competition.

Wimberley? Yoakum? Wimberley was a strong team last year but lost some leadership and their JV wasn't impressive. Yoakum lost their all wordly player in Riley Boening, not to mention they graduated almost all the talent they had.

This will be viewed as a homer post, but remember this one in 3 months! Liberty Hill returns 9 starters from last years Area Runner up team. Entire pitching staff is returning which includes Kramer Schlaudt and Kyle Crane who in 2 games allowed 1 hit to state tournament Finalist Yoakum. Three outfielders with potential 4.4 Forty times and a lineup completly stacked with speed and power.

Both of those schools will still be playing into summer break in Region I. I have no faith in the voter system of rankings. They are simply a guess at an opinion. It's not even an opinion if you haven't seen a team play. Very rarely will you see a powerhouse team come out of nowhere in baseball. Powerhouse programs are what you see and that is due to the local support system that is in place in the towns. I know for fact that Iowa Park or Graham has been the Region I rep at the State Tournament 6 out of the last 13 years. That isn't coincidence. That is local youth baseball organizations feeding a High School program with quality talent year in and year out and outstanding coaching staffs that know what it takes to win playoff games.

Of course preseason polls are just opinions and guesses. That's a no-brainer.

As for Iowa Park, I'm thinking your baseball program is getting respect for a #26-#30 ranking even though you have a lot of unknowns. Your coach claims that you only have 5 players returning from last year's team. It looks as though you have only one of your top 3 pitchers from last year returning. That's a lot of question marks. Many of the teams on the list have a lot of returnees and some, like Bridge City & Columbia, have very talented players who have already signed with Texas and Texas A&M.

However, in defense of your argument, the poster from Canyon was shocked that his team was listed. However, he did comment that though the team was young it was returning experience.

I've never seen a poll in my life that was accurate regarding its preseason Top 10 vs. the actual playoffs. But for some of us who are interested and who find it hard to get much information statewide about the other teams, it's a discussion starter that will continue until the final game.

March 25 will be cool...Sinton (#2 in 3A) vs. Calallen (#2 and defending 4A champ). Should be a barn burner as usual. And Sinton is playing in the Calallen tourney 2 weeks prior so they could play then as well. It's always great competing with Sinton because the games are always hard fought and very close.
