well son of a gun. that was just ridiculous. I'm sure we thought it was just another walk in the park, and our youth caught up to us early. no 4 peat in girls hoops, and our lonestar cup 4 peat could take a good hit.

Gotta love the upsets. This is the 2nd big time program those lady tigers have knocked off. Beat an undefeated Wylie team and now Canyon.

From the Reporter News....what a comeback victory.

No. 19 Snyder girls rally for slim win over No. 2 Canyon
By John Hasselmeier / Special to the Reporter-News
February 17, 2006

LUBBOCK - The No. 19 Snyder girls basketball team is for real, and after Thursday's performance, perhaps a little underrated.

Jordan Stansell hit a put-back shot just before the buzzer to send the Lady Tigers to a 41-39 win over three-time defending state champion and No. 2 Canyon in Thursday night's Class 3A area playoff game at Lubbock Christian University's Rip Griffin Center.

Snyder, now 27-3, will face the winner of the Borger-Seminole area playoff game, which will be at 7 p.m. today in Plainview. Canyon finishes 24-5.

''I just knew it was going to be a close shot at the end and I put it back up as soon as I could,'' Stansell said.

Stansell's shot went in, the buzzer went off and the Lady Tigers started celebrating. However, the officials ruled that there was still a little bit of time left.

''I couldn't get too excited,'' Stansell said. ''I didn't know what had happened.''

Canyon's Lauren Simpson put up a three-quarter-court 3-pointer that went off the mark before the Snyder players, coaches and crowd celebrated.

At first, the game looked like it might be another Canyon rout. However, Snyder did something many other Lady Eagle playoff opponents have not done - the Lady Tigers stayed with Canyon.

The Lady Eagles led 15-6 after the first quarter and 25-14 at halftime. After three quarters, the Lady Tigers were still in the game as Canyon led 34-25.

''We didn't change a whole lot,'' Snyder coach Mike Martin said. ''I felt like at the end of the third quarter, we had kind of figured out an offensive strategy. Before that, we just couldn't hardly get into an offense.''

Then came a quarter neither Martin, nor his team, will ever forget.

''I felt like we were still in the game, but we had to make some plays,'' Martin said. ''We got hot. We hit some 3s out there and made them turn it over a few times.''

Sirena Medrano, who had already hit one 3-pointer in the second half, hit another one. She then came up with a steal and Stansell connected to make it a 34-29 game 51 seconds into the final period.

Sequoya Powell hit a free throw to make it a four-point game, but Simpson hit a 3-pointer on the other end to keep Canyon in front at 37-30 with 6:17 left to play.

Medrano hit a basket to cut it to five again and a Stansell free throw cut it to four. It remained 37-33 until 2:17 left when Medrano hit her third 3-pointer of the game to cut it to 37-36.

Snyder got the ball back and Medrano buried still another trey to put Snyder in front for the first time at 39-37 with 1:33 left. Martin then called a timeout.

Once time was back in, Cherilyn McMenamy tied the game for Canyon with 1:07 left to play.

Snyder worked the ball down. With about five seconds to go, Medrano put up a shot. Stansell was there for the rebound and stuck it back in. A short time later, the Lady Tigers had a win for the ages to celebrate.

''I thought Medrano's shot was good when it left her hand,'' Martin said. ''It came off the front. I saw Stansell go up. That's an unusual play for her, to just put it back. It crawled over the front of the rim and went in. She made a great play.''

Medrano led all scorers with 16 points. Powell joined her in double figures with 10. Mandi Whitecotton led Canyon in scoring with 13 points, including a 3-pointer.

''I asked the kids in the fourth quarter to give us a shot in the fourth quarter to win the ball game,'' Martin said. ''That's what they did. They gave us a shot in the fourth quarter to win that ball game.

''It's just a huge victory for us. The community is behind this team and has been all year. It's a victory for the whole community.''

SNYDER - Sirena Medrano 5 0-0 16; Terann Ragland 3 0-1 7; Sequoya Powell 4 2-4 10; Teddie Crenwelge 0 0-0 0; Jordan Stansell 3 2-4 8; Glyn Wright 0 0-0 0; Katy Crenwelge 0 0-0 0. TOTALS 15 4-9 41

WOW! That was the best game in my life. This is such a great comeback after not making the playoff's last year due to fighting. They have came through and showed everyone that they mean business. Hope for a LONG run!!!! Congrats Martin and the Lady Tigers.
