Prosper football coach resigns

John Pease, Prosper’s head football coach and athletic director the past four years, said Thursday he is no longer coaching at the school.
Pease said Prosper superintendent Drew Watkins told him Monday he was being stripped of his athletic director job and was asked to remain as head football coach. Pease declined to do that and resigned. He informed his players of the situation Wednesday.
Watkins said he could not comment on personnel issues. He said met with Pease on Monday, but couldn’t elaborate on the meeting’s details. Pease said he was not surprised with what transpired and described the incident as “small-town politics.”
Pease guided Prosper to the playoffs the past four seasons, compiling a 29-18 record. Last fall, Prosper finished 10-3 and made longest playoff run in school history when it advanced to the Class 2A Division II regional semifinals.
Before Pease took over, Prosper had qualified for the playoffs only twice, with the last appearance coming in 1979. Prosper was 32-66-1 in the 10 seasons before Pease became head coach.
