I'm still shocked that Wylie/Gainesville IS on the list but Wylie/Canyon ISN'T on the list. Granted Wylie/Gainesville was a great game with a play (Keenum's hurdle) that will stick in the minds of all in attendance for a long time. However, the 4th quarter comeback of the Wylie/Canyon game and it coming down to a last-second FG was a better overall story. Just my thoughts...

I think UT's win over USC in the Rose Bowl should be on the list... and the Pitt/Indy game...

wait, high school... nevermind...

i am very partial to the canton/gilmer game. when it was over i really felt the best team did not win the game. on the other hand i could not believed what i had just witnessed. an absolutely unbelievable football game that had both sides ecstatic for one moment and crushed the next. although we lost, i really felt like i had just witnessed history in texas high school football.

I figured that the monahans/bridgeport game would be on there 43-42 in OT

those were some good games but i think that the BH Kirbyville playoff game should have made it on there somewhere ((maybe its just cuz im from BH)) but that was an awesome game...

Its unbelievable that the Sweetwater / Iowa Park game isnt on the list. Sweetwater down by 21 in the 4th. Score 21 in a span of less than 6 minutes to tie the game with only a few ticks left on the clock, to put the game in OT. The field gole kicker that missed the extra point against Snyder in the quarters the year before, hits all attempts right down the middle. Sweetwater wins in OT.
The most creative sports writer in the world couldnt have scripted it any better. That was the greatest game I have ever seen. Not only should it be on the list, it should be #1.

Does anyone happen to know how many football games, all classes, were played during the 2005 season?

I thought maybe the Bridgeport/Lake Worth 4-overtime game would make the list, or perhaps the Bridgeport/Monahans playoff game.

That's a good question.....it's got to be a pretty big number and to pick 40 out of that seems like an astronomical task to me.

Good job Chris!

here is the formula for calculating...we can let 3AFan do the research

# of football playing teams in the UIL X 10 regular season scheduled games = A

A - # of regular season games cancelled due to hurricanes/weather/lighting problems/etc. = B

B is the total of regular season games played

31*5 = C = 155 (# of Div 1 games across all classifications)

63*5 = D = 315 (# of Div 2 games across all classifications)

So the total # of games played = B + C + D.

Note: In some of the 1A playoffs there are "bye games" and to simplify the math I am counting those in here as a win. I am not sure if the teams that received one counted it as a win (I'm assuming that they didnt) but it makes the math easier.

Note 2: I am also making the assumption that every team did in fact schedule 10 regular season games.

Now if somebody can just figure out what B represents...then we have our number!

I'm sure there is an article somewhere from South Texas that spells out the # of HS football games cancelled because of the hurricane. Then add in another 5-10 games for "random happenings" and you have the # of games not played. Finding the # of teams in the UIL shouldn't be too hard either.

6 man - 118
1A - 150
2A 236
3A - 179
4A - 230
5A - 245

ADD & = 1158 total schools

times 10 for regular season = 11580

minus .5 games per team due to weather of all types = 11001 = B

+ 155 D1 games = 11156

+ 315 D2 games = 11471

Total # of games is 11471.

although your math is great... its wrong... because you are being redundant in counting the amount of games a team plays....

District 0 has 4 teams...
Team A
Team B
Team C
Team D

there are only 6 football games played between them 4 in district play alone... ya know what i mean? simply counting the number of schools, then multiplying by 10 would give you not ht enumber of games played... but the number of schools x 10. You would have to factor in the fact that you are counting a game twice for every school. so take your total number and divide by 2...

Done with help of Laura T. & BHTrainer.

If you go thru every classification and take out all the schools that play basketball only, you end up with 1,127 schools.
Using your formula that adds up to 11,177 games total.
Thats still a bunch of games.

I hadnt thought about that. You are correct.
That would work out to be about 5,823 games then.
Still alot of games.

yeah I realized later that I had double counted my formula. My formula would actually count all the regular season games that were on a schedule...and obviously they are on two schedules!!! My bad for not fixing it. My only other thought is where you came up with the .5 figure for teams that had a game cancelled for whatever reason. Figure that roughly 50% of all schools are in regions 3 & 4 across the board (it's probably closer to 42-45% in reality) and then assume that approximately 70% of those schools had 1 game cancelled due to Hurricane Rita. That may help provide a better number.

On a random side note, does anybody else find that they had mediocore results in math/algebra/calc courses but when given practical and REAL numbers to work with that they do very well? It's true for me because I always struggled with formulas for theoretical instances...but give me a poker scenario and I do really well with the probabilities...I can derive a formula (albeit a rough guess) to calculate all the HS football games played in a matter of minutes. However, you could ask me to figure out when train A traveling W from Dallas @ X mph will meet up with train B traveling E from El Paso @ X mph...and I could struggle all day with that problem BECAUSE IT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!!!
