Since WC will get the first round bye, they match up with the Wimberly district first.

'Necks lock up 25-3A top seed

By Billy Loveless
The Facts

Published February 8, 2006

SWEENY — Columbia High School’s dominance of District 25-3A continued Tuesday night.

Roughneck athletics teams have already claimed district titles in football and girls basketball this school year. Now, Columbia’s boys basketball team can add itself to the list of champions after a 72-64 victory over Sweeny on Tuesday.

The win guarantees the Roughnecks a share of the 25-3A championship, as well as the top playoff seed. Columbia (19-8, 8-0) currently holds a two-game lead over second-place Stafford — which faced Wharton on Tuesday with no result available before presstime — with two games left in the regular season. Even if Columbia loses its final two contests and Stafford wins its closing games, the Roughnecks would earn the No. 1 seed because they beat Stafford in both meetings this year.

In this scenario, both teams would be declared co-district champs. But one more win for Columbia — which faces Palacios and Needville in its final two games — and the Roughnecks would earn sole possession of the 25-3A title. An added incentive for the Roughnecks to win their closing games is that two more wins would tie the school record of 21 victories.

While at least a share of the title has Columbia fans celebrating, a Roughneck playoff berth has become a fairly regular occurrence in recent years.

“We’re kind of a little secret hanging around over here,” Columbia head coach John Vernor said. “Nobody knows a lot about us. This will be eight out of the last 11 years to go to the playoffs and the second time to win district (in that span). Eight times out of 11 isn’t too bad.”

Earning the top seed Tuesday evening wasn’t a walk in the park for the Roughnecks, though.

Sweeny (11-17, 3-5), which entered the contest in a tie with Wharton and Needville for the district’s third and final postseason spot, turned in an emotional performance that was highlighted by a late rally.

Led by strong second-half performances by Wendel Davis, Tank Carder, Ryan Follett and Vernice Smith, the Bulldogs cut an 18-point Columbia lead to only eight points with a little more than a minute left in the game. But Roughneck post Rick Gamboa broke the Bulldogs’ full-court press with two fast-break layups and Jason Scott nailed two free throws to seal the victory.

Roughneck Jess Krumwiede also turned in a stellar fourth quarter, scoring 13 of his game-high 27 points in the final eight minutes.

The last two quarters were also marred with fouls. In the second half alone, the teams combined for 31 free throws, with the Bulldogs shooting 21 of those freebies.

Also turning in a big scoring performance for the Roughnecks were Gamboa and Justin Scott with 19 and 10 points, respectively.

The game’s first half was all Columbia, with the Roughnecks jumping out to a 21-11 lead after the first period and extending the advantage to 37-23 at the half.

Robert Williams paced the Bulldog scorers with 17 points in the contest, followed by Carder with 14 and Davis with 10.

It was the third time Sweeny lost to Columbia this year. The Bulldogs dropped both district games to the Roughnecks, as well as a matchup in the Brazosport ISD Holiday Classic tournament in December.

“That’s the third scrappy game we’ve had with them,” Sweeny coach Shannon Hooker said. “We’ve come close, but just can’t get it. We’ll learn from it and gain experience from it.

“We’ll come back and fight another day,” Hooker added. “And that next day is Friday when we go to Wharton, so we don’t have long to hang our heads.”

Friday’s contest looks to be the Bulldogs’ biggest of the season, as they face a Wharton team that is looking for the final postseason spot. Wharton played Stafford on Tuesday and, after hosting Sweeny on Friday, will close the season against Palacios. After the Wharton contest, Sweeny ends the regular season against Stafford.

Needville, the third team that entered this week in the three-way, third-place tie, played Palacios on Tuesday, and finishes up the year with games against district leaders Stafford and Columbia.

Columbia will play the winner of the 2nd place from 28-3A(Lytle/LaVernia) vs 3rd place from 27-3A(Wimberley). 25-3A's 2nd and 3rd place teams match up with 26-3A(Cuero, Yoakum, Gonzales). Stafford will be the runner-up in 25-3A but 3rd place is still up in the air. Could be Sweeny, Wharton or Needville. Wharton seems to have the inside track because one of their two games left is Palacios.

Needville has the worst road, they have to play Stafford and West Columbia.

Sweeny vs Wharton is the big one. If Sweeny somehow beats Wharton then it will probably wind up in a 3-way tie for that third spot.

Remaining Schedules:

Wharton:

Sweeny
Palacios

Needville:

Stafford
Columbia

Sweeny:

Wharton
Stafford

if everything goes as planned, even if sweeny beats Wharton:
Sweeny would be (4-6)
Wharton would be (4-6)
Needville would be (3-7)

wharton and sweeny would have a 1 game playoff for the 3rd place spot.

if wharton beats sweeny and palacios, they are in.
