New foes on SHS '06 slate
By RON HOWELL/Reporter Sports Editor

The University Interscholastic League's biennial reclassification and realignment last week shook up most of West Texas' current football districts, and Sweetwater and Roscoe were no exception.

The Mustangs and Plowboys will still play in Class 3A and 1A, respectively, but their districts not only changed numbers but a few teams as well. It also forced head coaches Kent Jackson and Wes Williams to make some major changes in their non-district schedules for the next two seasons, or until the next realignment in February 2008.

Sweetwater moves from Dis-trict 4-3A to District 7-3A and will still face Wylie and Clyde, but Comanche and Breckenridge have replaced Snyder and Merkel in the new five-team setup. Sweetwater begins district play on Oct. 13 at Comanche, and hosts Breckenridge in its final game of the season on Nov. 10. The Mustangs will host Clyde on Oct. 20, and go to Wylie on Oct. 27 before taking an open date Nov. 3.

Wylie, with 916 students, has by far the highest enrollment in District 7-3A and falls just 33 short of the Class 3A cutoff announced by the UIL on Thursday. The 3A range is between 415 and 949 students, while Class 4A is for schools between 950 and 1,984 students. The realignment meant a drop to Class 2A for Merkel, which has an enrollment of 409 students, while Snyder stayed in Class 3A but is now in a new four-team district with An-drews, Lamesa and Midland Greenwood.

Sweetwater played Andrews and Greenwood in non-district the past two years, along with Lubbock Cooper, San Angelo Lake View, Pecos and Levelland. But the Mustangs will have an all-new set of non-district foes this fall.

The season begins Sept. 1 against Class 4A Wichita Falls High. Another 4A school - Brownwood - comes to town to face Sweetwater on Sept. 8 at the second annual Sammy Baugh Classic. The Mustangs will then go to Brownwood on Thursday, Sept. 14, to face 3A power Decatur at the Gordon Wood Clas-sic.

Sweetwater faces another tough 3A school, Canyon, on Sept. 22 and renews its rivalry with former Class 4A district foe Big Spring on Sept. 29 before ending its non-district schedule against Borger on Oct. 6.

Roscoe has moved from District 10-A to District 15-A, and has acquired some new rivals as well. Leaving the current seven-team district will be Bronte, Forsan, Hermleigh and Sterling City, while Baird, Albany, Rotan and Hamlin have moved in. Winters and Roby are moving with Roscoe from 10-A to 15-A to create the new seven-team setup.

Like Sweetwater, Roscoe's non-district schedule has undergone a complete makeover from the past two years. The current lineup of Stanton, Miles, Hamlin and Post will be replaced by Iraan, Coahoma, Christoval and Anson, in that order.

Iraan, coached by former Sweetwater assistant Joe Willis, will be the Plowboys' first opponent on either Aug. 31 or Sept. 1. Roscoe will face Coahoma the following Thursday, Sept. 7, at the Sammy Baugh Classic in Sweetwater and complete its non-district schedule by facing Christoval and Anson. Coahoma and Anson are both in Class 2A while Christoval and Iraan are 1A.

Roscoe goes to Baird for its 15-A opener on Sept. 29 and also has district road games Oct. 13 at Winters and Oct. 27 at Rotan.

The Plowboys' three district home games will be Oct. 6 against Roby, Oct. 20 against Hamlin and the season finale Nov. 10 against Albany.
