It is amazing indeed what you come across just by accident when doing research. Did you know that Michigan won the 1901 MNC (Mythical National Championship) in college football? They were 11 - 0 and won the first Rose Bowl game by beating Stanford 49 - 0 that was called at the end of the third quarter.
This team outscored their opponents 550 - 0.
Michigan was a power from 1901 to 1905 with only one tie and a loss during those five seasons.
They were also MNC in 1902 with a 11 - 0 record. They outscored their opponents that year 644 - 12.
In 1903 they had an 11- 0 - 1 record with only 6 to 6 tie with Minnesota marring their record outscoring their opponents 565 - 6 (Yes the only points that cost them a perfect season was scored in the tie game against them). The MNC was awarded to Princeton who had a perfect 11 - 0 record.
In 1904 Michigan had a perfect 10 - 0 record outscoring their opponents 567 - 22 but the MNC was awarded to Pennsylvania who had a perfect 12 - 0 record.
In 1905 Michigan had their first loss in five years but still had a great 12 - 1 season and outscored their opponents 495 to 2. Their only loss was to Chicago by a 0 - 2 scored (Yes Chicago scored the only points against them in their win over them). By winning this game Chicago went 10 - 0 and won the MNC that year. This was no doubt one of the earliest MNC games ever played so to speak.

Some of the interesting scores from those years are as follows:

1901

128 - 0 over Buffalo

21- 0 over Ohio State

50 - 0 over Iowa

1902

23 - 0 over Minnesota

119 - 0 over Michigan Agriculture

23 - 0 over Minnesota

23 - 0 over Notre Dame

86 to 0 over Ohio State!!

107 to 0 over Iowa!!

1903

36 to 0 over Ohio State!!

51 - 0 over Indiana!

1904

95 - 0 over Kalamazoo

31 - 6 over Ohio State!!

130 - 0 over West Virginia!

Yes those were all great years for Michigan and strange that none of them especially the 1901 team that went to the Rose Bowl has not been pushed as one of the best teams that ever was even though I am sure that UT in 2005 could have beat them.

An interesting note is that the game with the University of Chicago was played on the last day of the season. Chicago had a great team that year and only allowed 5 points scored agains them and that was in a 16 to 5 win over Indiana.

An interesting side note to the University of Chicago who won the MNC in 1905 was that their 1904 team played UT and beat UT 68 to 0. A big factor was that Chicago was the home team. Some UT fans still haven't gotten over this tragic loss. :)
