Subject: [AggiesAsk Web Script] 12th Man

Question by me:

NAME: XXXXXXX XXXXXX c/o 2008
LOCATION: Aggieland
PHONE:
MESSAGE:
What is A&M's official stance with the Seattle Seahawks using the "12th
Man" so extensively? I know we have copyrights and trademarks and stuff
over the "12th Man," so why are they allowed to market it like this?

Remote IP Address:128.***.**.***

Answer:

They aren't. We have sent them cease-and-desist papers repeatedly over
the last two years. They'll be forced to shut it down if they do not
comply.

if aTm were to bring legal action that would be really crappy of them .....

eh.. i dont know about that. A&M is tradition rich and the 12th man is a part of that. They are very proud of what they have and if someone else uses something they started AFTER they warned them there should be some kind of consequence.

i don't see them seeking legal reprecussions from it unless they over-killed it in these weeks leading up to the super bowl and afterwards if they win the bowl

so does this mean if a HS starts using a 12th man, per se, and it catchs on... A&M will send a cease and desist order to them as well? please... this is rediculous... LOOK OUTSIDE THE BOX

I wouldn't see a problem with it being used by a High School because it is not nationally... But it's tradition... Having another 12th man nationally noticed kind of water's down A&M's tradition...

I root for UT every year when they play A&M and all, but I respect tradition and would love to only see it used nationally by A&M, not by anyone else, esspecially a left-coast team...

If someone had "Hook 'Em" somewhere across the country it'd water down UT's in my opinion...

It'd be different in my opinion if A&M had been doing it for just 10 years and wanted to complain...

I agree, I am a UT fan but it kind of bothered me seeing the Seahawks using something that A&M started. It just aint right IMO.

Uhhh.....considering the aggie's 12th man hasn't done much for them lately, I think I would re-consider it, if I were Seattle.

but its not like a business-type copyright infringement thats gonna cost aTm $M's because the Seahawks stole their idea .............. its not costing aTm anything in $s, prestige, nothing at all ............ they should be happy that a Pro football team is copying them

BTW, aTm down by 11 now, 7:30 to go

The state of Texas needs to fight back... I think in '97, Schulenburg was forced by whoever came up with the Superman Logo (the diamond S thing) to stop selling products with their logo, I mean it kinda sucks pickin' on the little guy, but hey, the people who designed the Logo put their work into it, they were origional... are you saying there should no longer be rewards for being origional??? Guess we should just start copying each other, life would be so much easier :p :D

If it's trademarked, A&M should react just because someone had the balls to disrespect their originality...

Even if A&M sues and wins the Seattle fans will still put up signs and where shirts that say 12th man on them. It will be like the Detroit fans this year and Fire Matt Millen signs.
