Can someone share info with me? I know very little about the season, matches, what all is involved, etc., so any info is appreciated.

Something I just learned yesterday at a meet my youngest son was involved in was that if 2 lifters have the same lift total, the contestant that weighs less gets the win.

Some of my info might be a little outdated, but here's what I know. There are several different weight classes. 114, 123, 132, 148, 165, 181, 202, 242 and super heavy. You're only competing against people in your weight class. There are three lifts - dead lift, bench press and squats. you get three rounds at each lift. For example your first round on the bench press - you try 200. The next round you might go up to 220, maybe 230 the next round. If you lifted the 230 pounds successfully you have 230 points for that lift. If you didn't do the 230, but did the 220 - you have 220 points. The same is done with the squat and dead lift. They add up the three and that's your total or score. The power lifting season and meets should be starting soon.

Thanks guys. Are the meets usually on Saturdays or during the week? I hate being clueless. :(

There are also several ways to scratch (your lift does not count in your total score)

If you move your foot while benching
If you make the lift uncontroled the bar is uneven going up
If you hesitate any at all while lifting, it has to be a fluid motion

I am sure there are others these are just some of the mistakes my son has made in the past

He just went to a practice meet last Sat. My husband thought he made his final bench, but the judge said no that the bar was unevenly locked out ( as he was lifting the weight one arm was stronger than the other and pushed the weight on that side of the bar up first)

I am also a powerlifter, but I concentrate on 12 oz curls! I don't go for max lift, just most reps! haha

# 55 will probably be competing, or at least trying out for the team.

My daughter has her first meet tomorrow.
She loves it. This is her 3rd year and she has been working really hard to improve herself. She worked out during the off season with a professional female bodybuilder. All I know is 5:40am is going to come awful early.

My son for one has a permanent back injury due to this...he looks back on it now and wishes he had stood up to the ones who insisted they 'max out'. Even a doctor could not convince 'those in charge' of the danger and harm to be done.

I would be right with you on the most reps......

My little brother is competing for LW he placed first either last week or the week before in the 123's at the decatur meet, he told me he is gonna try and drop the lb and a half he is out of the 114's. his total was 775, up 15 lbs from his best lift last year. hes a senior this year.

I did an 820 in the 123's. I feel like the SNL skit where Chris Farley is answering phone calls with "How much ya bench?"

It is terrible to hear that your son has this injury. I was actually making a joke and meant to say 12 oz curls. My son and his friends all go for reps as I have showed them. They want to be in shape, but not try to bulk up.

This was years ago - or so my bathroom scale tells me - but I was always at the top of the weight limit. Always weighed in right at 123.

I am with you on the reps :)

Well, they had the team meeting yesterday and had to be there at 6:30 this morning to weigh in, measure for suit, etc. He told me last night if I do come to their meet(s), I might want to get there late since they'll be weighing in wearing skivvies or less.  I had to tell him I didn't think they'd be weighing in out in the middle for everyone to see.
