I know that there are a lot of high school football players that get overlooked by the college teams and or scouts. It happens every year.

NCAA Division III football is alive and well in Texas. We have a host of universities that play football at the division III level. What this means is that the university has athletic programs however they do not offer athletic scholarships. Now they do offer many other scholarship that can make up the difference.

I would like to call your attention to Hardin-Simmons University located in Abilene. My son plays for the Cowboys and it is a very good place to not only go to school but also play football. This university competes for a conference championship every year. They have an established coaching staff and have first class facilities with a very nice stadium on campus.

Mary Hardin-Baylor (A rival of HSU) is also a great place to go to school and play football. Although they play at the high school stadium in Belton, they also compete for a conference championship every year.

Texas Lutheran Univ is also a D III as well as Trinity in San Antonio.

McMurry is another DIII school in Abilene.

Austin College is located in Sherman.

Howard Payne is in Bownwood and had a much improved team this year.

Sul Ross State is in Apline and although that is way out in the country it is a state school so the tuition is not that bad.

If you know of a player that has not got the looks from a college team and you know they are a great player tell them about the D III route. They can contact the coaching staff right away for a visit.

FYI out of all of the crossover games that DIII playes against DII and NAIA schools last year they went about 50/50. Meaning that the non-scholarship schools beat the scholarships schools about half the time. There are some big time players in DIII believe me. Also most of these schools have a junior varsity so the freshmen get a chance to play right away.

Austin College went 1-9 last season, but has a new coach for 2006 in Ronnie Gage, who won two state titles in the '90s at Lewisville High.

They're moving to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, the conference that Trinity University is in.

Just some more info on the 'Roos.

Left out my alma mater ETBU. Located in Marshall, Texas they revived their football program a few years ago and have made nice strides in D-III.

Etbu has the best stadium out of anyone not to mention a nice fieldhouse. http://www.etbu.edu/Current+Athletic+News/Football/Ornelas+Stadium.htm

Austin College and Trinity has the best education of any of the D-III schools in Texas. Trinity is one of the best kept secrets in the country.

I'm proud to have my degree from AC. Southwestern in Georgetown is also D-III, but they don't play football. They're in the SCAC as well.

My son and one of the Rockdale QB's went to the Air-It-Out passing camp at HS last summer. Great camp, seperated out by grades (7-8, 9-10 & 11-12) with about 8 to 1 athletes to coach ratio. Plenty of reps, coach Wartes said "you guys came here to throw and catch balls and that is what you do here". I bet my son caught about 600 passes from coaches and other camping QB's from all over the state. We plan to go back and take more kids from Rockdale.

I play at TLU and it is a lot of fun. The thing that makes it fun is that you are playing with a bunch of kids that want to be there. Its not like they are getting scholarships or anything they are just playing because they love the game and it makes it pretty fun.

I Agree. Hardin Simmons has a great program. I have unfortunaly been barred by a knee specialist from playing full contact football, but if I could play, I'd Transfer to Hardin Simmons and make the team there. Nice School too.

I think that one of the major issues that hold some people back at these schools is money. Hardin-Simmons, Howard Payne, Austin College, and man, you better have some cash if you go to Trinity. Most are private schools, and you've got to pay the private tuition.

Hardin-Simmons was hot and heavy recuiting me 10 years ago, they offered 4K per year and I still would have gone 12k in the hole each year. I had to pass for monetary reasons.

Austin College is right up there with Trinity in cost. Just ask my student loans....ouch.

I know that we use student loans to help our son go to HSU. He also receives several scholarships. Between that and the state grants he can aford it. Think of it this way, the experience of playing for championship caliber team is priceless. Not to mention the acadimics are first class.

I played in this league when it was still NAIA Div 2, I went to Midwestern mostly because it was the cheaper of the schools that wanted me (HSU & HPU). When we went to Abilene to play HSU my freshman year, I knew I had messed up when I saw the facilities there. I wish that ETBU would have been playing ball when I got out of HS, that would have been a perfect place to go considering I was an ETex kid and all.

I think that D3 football is great for those kids that really want to play football after HS. At these schools they can actually get on the field rather than having to work there way on as a walk on for 4 years.

Thanks for the info. Let me say this to you guys that have gone to these private schools. You got a quality education and you attended a school where you were not just a number. If you grauated from Trinity or Austin College I would imagine that you W-2's are not to shabby either. I love D-III football due to it enables you to get to know the kids.

This conference has been strong at the top in the past few years with HPU, HSU, and UMHB battling it out for a conference title almost every year. Last year UMHB went all the way to the D3 national championship game that they could have one if only a few plays would have gone the other way. They also have some great new facilities and not just for football. These three schools have a great rivalry going in every sport not just football.

Must you have something negative to say about everything?

Alot of the 3-a players that are thought to be too small or not fast enough are given a place to show what they can do. D-3 players get drafted all the time maybe not as high as all the names you hear on ESPN every week. Plus they get a chance to play not just stand on the sideline.

Jerahme Urban wide receiver from Trinity 2002 plays for the Seahawks. He is on injured reserve now with a stress fracture of the foot. He is very well liked on the Seahawks and has contributed to several victories in the past two seasons. He was an All American at Trinity and hails from Victoria Texas.

FYI, Trinity is ranked #1 in US News and World Report among the Western Regional Univesities (those offering Master's degrees but not PhDs) and has been for as long as I can remember. The average SAT is 1350 and all their student athletes are good scholars. Despite the difficulties in finding talented football players with the acedemic credentials to gain entrance there the Tigers have won the SCAC 13 years straight making 9 straight NCAA play offs in DIII. They are ranked consistantly in the top 20 and have one of the top winning records in DIII history. It is a terrific school with excellent facilities and a beautiful campus in a wonderful city, San Antonio. My son is on the team but was out with a back injury this year. Any student athlete with the grades who wants to get a world class education and play some top level football should contact Coach Mohr at:

smohr@trinity.edu

BTW most students are on a variety of financial aid, so if someone really wants to attend Trinity the funds are available. There is a recruiting day coming up next week so if you are interested act now.

I have never had a boss from a D-1 school. :D

Check the nunbers on endowments of Texas Schools. You may suprised to discover that Trinity only trails Rice with like a six hundred and fifty million dollar endowment. Trinity speaks for itself and I would venture to say that not many on this board could get in.

Like grizwald stated there are so many 3A players that don't get the opportunity to play DI football. I know that the DIII coaches really look at the lower classification schools when recruiting. This is not to say that there are not 5A players on the DIII teams but generally speaking our 3A kids are either too slow or too small or too something else for these big programs like Texas. Then they go to a DIII and become an All American. DIII football is gold Chief.

Actually the majority of players on the DIII roster at Trinity, Austin College, and TLU hail from 5A programs. However, there are plenty of players from the lower enrollment schools. Trinity has about 10 from 1A through 3A including Chris Bauer from Shiner, the 2004 All State 1A MVP at RB. He lettered as a freshman and played in all 10 games as a kickoff returner and backup tailback. Scored a nice TD on a 22 yard run against Center too. I noticed a number of former Cuero players on the TLU roster and many from Lindale, Forney, and Commerce on the Austin College rosters as well. DIII is great football, way underrated probably due to the emphasis on academics over athletics that the schools hold. BTW Trinity got a transfer from SMU at CB, Ted Barnhart, who made All SCAC this season. Better to play for a winner than warm the bench for a losing program like SMU.
