Fairfield ends Mexia's 18-3A winning streak

FAIRFIELD – The Fairfield Eagles not only beat Mexia, 64-51, Friday night. They beat history.

Fairfield (20-3) ended a36-game district winning streak by Mexia in the 18-3A opener. It was only the Blackcats' second district loss this millennium and it was by far the most convincing.

“It's a big, big win for us. We've been close repeatedly against Mexia, but they always have been able to come back and get us,” Fairfield coach Joey Worley said. “They are the standard. We tried hard to end it last year a couple of times.”

Fairfield lost, 52-50 in overtime, on their home court last season, and the Blackcats used a buzzer-beater two years ago to win on the Eagles' home court. The Eagles' last district win over Mexia came in 2000, the last year the Blackcats failed to win the district title. They have won seven of their last eight.

“Twice, we thought we had a good chance the last couple of years and good Mexia teams came back and beat us,” Worley said. “The kids really limited their number of shots tonight, which we thought would be huge.”

“They come to an end some time,” said Mexia coach Tony Pinson, whose Cats lost for the first time in six games in Fairfield's Johnson Activity Center. “We're OK, if we can make layups and free throws.”

Mexia's last lead came late in the opening period, when Bryan High hit a shot for a 13-10 advantage. McMillian answered with a three-pointer to tie the game with 1:24 left and Nolan Melontree score late to give the Eagles a lead they never lost.

The Eagles used a 7-0 run in the second quarter top take their biggest lead at 26-19 when Jarrett Manning stole the ball and raced in for a dunk with2:03 left until halftime.

Eagles' junior guard Billy McMillian hit three treys in the opening half.

High had 20 points for game scoring honors. McMillian had 17 to lead the Eagles, who also got 14 from guard Asa Douglas and 13 by Nolan Melontree.

Melontree keyed the inside game in the second half, when the Blackcats were battling foul trouble. A 22-11 third-quarter advantage solidified the Eagles' lead.

Mexia, forced to move forward Justin Chambers to point guard because two players had been lost to grades, battled Fairfield's pressure. Chambers did not score.

“Against good teams, we have trouble. We missed layups and they forced us to turn it over three times in a row,” Mexia coach Tony Pinson said. “They are definitely a good team.”

In the girls' game, Mexia's Sharmaine Carter hit two free throws with 5.6 seconds left and the Lady Cats edged the Lady Eagles, 50-47.

Hopefully both teams are at full strength when they play again in Mexia where Mexia hasnt lost a district game in 8 or 9 years. If Fairfield wins district this year it will be the first time since 97. So far this year Fairfield is undefeated at home
