Santa Claws brought my 13 yr old son a weight training system for Christmas. Now, my son is in the 8th grade and in pretty good shape due to sports and weight training after school. I think I may have issued a challenge that I can't win.

We were lifting some and I popped off and told him I can work out and get to where I can bench press 300lb's before he can reach 200lb's.

Tonight we started out and I benched 200lbs (and figured that was enough for the first day, I have to work tomorrow) and he benched 150lbs. Now guys I'm 37 yrs old, fat, out of shape and have no business under 300lbs on the bench. I think I'm in trouble.......

Maybe BigBlueDE and Tiger WR can give me some pointers that can help a old man out.

Well take it slow is all I can say. If you rush it you could injury yourself. If you are at 200 now it will probably take you a good 9 months or better to get up to 300. Or at least that has been my experience. So settle in for the long hual and go at it slow and surely. One thing we as parents have learned is patience. So be patient and take it slow and sure.

BTW Z Motion Jr. has a long way to go before he will pass this old man in the bench. Now running a 40 is another story! Of corse the difference here is a lineman vs. a safety! You can figure out who the linemen is.

Im 46 and my old man is 73. I'm not real sure I can out out bench him or out run him even now. I know for a fact, I cant out work him. An amazing man for sure. He will probably live to see 100. He may even outlive me.

Ooh! Now that was a blatant personal foul. Go set the bench for a while son. No points, and if you do that again, you will be ejected!
Swish! Swish! both free throws good!!!
I'm up by 2.

It depends on what you used to bench before middle aged "atrophy" began to set in. If you used to bench 300 lbs, then you will get it back more quickly than imagined. A couple of years ago I started working out with a couple of young guys. The first time I put 200 pounds on the bar I thought I was going to have a coronary. When you are not used to the heavy weights and the balancing required for free weights, then it can be overwhelming. However, after working out for about 3 months I was benching around 275 which is about what I benched in high school...I was really surprised.
