Who are the sports figures that you admire/admired the most?
(Can be players, coaches(including highschool), or team owners)

1. Tom Landry- because of his integrity and character
2. Roger Staubach - because of his character and tenacity
3. Walter Payton - because of the way he played the game.

good choices Bullaholic. i would have to add G.A. Moore to the list. Most people don't really know GA, they just hear things and start assuming. he is a man of high character. if you got to know him you'd realize that he's from the Tom Landry mode. He stopped coaching in the 70's to go into the Seminary. he has weekend retreats on his ranch for the kids at the church he attends. if someone could seperate the assumptions and get to know him, they'd realize that he really is a remarkable person.

Lou Gehrig- My all-time hero. Actually got my HS number from him.... heard an old story of how Jordan wore the # 23 because he wanted to be half as good as his older brother (who wore number 45). I wore the # 2 because I wanted to be half the man he was. Lived in the shadow of the Babe and didn't mind that Ruth got all the credit. Just did his job, day-in, day-out, without bringing any attention to himself. Devoted himself to defense (wanted to model himself after 1B defensive specialist Bill Terry) at a time when the game was changing to a more offensive game and went to work every day for 2,130 straight days without any regard for a "streak." It didn't even become that big of a deal until someone noticed that he was nearing on on 2K straight. The only thing that broke the Iron Horse were a pass on his wife by Ruth (Gehrig never forgave him) and a degenerative muscle disease, ALS.

David Robinson- Tons of class. Sticks by his values and morals no matter what may come or how "soft" everyone calls him... 'nough said.

Zack Thomas- Undersized, not especially fast, wasn't supposed to make it in the NFL. Went in the third round, became an All-Pro.

Craig Biggio- See Lou Gehrig. Started his career as a catcher. When the Stros needed a second-baseman, he did it without complaining. When they picked up Jeff Kent and wanted Biggio to move to the OF, you heard more complaining from Kent than from Biggio. And he does it all with a smile on his face, just happy that he's playing the game.

Terrell Owens..........tons of character, gets along well with teammates, never criticizes anyone, and never picks fights with former players.

on a serious note...

Garrison Hearst- knee surgery after knee surgery and kept coming back.

Andrew Heard- People from Cuero know his story and how remarkable he is.

James Blake- tennis player who was down a whole year with an injury but made his return to face Andre A. The battle was remarkable and Blake barely lost in probably one of the greatest tennis matches ever.

1. Ryne Sandberg- I will name my first son Ryne in his honor. One of, if not the, greatest second basemen of all time.

2. Ronnie Lott- C'mon, who else do you know would rather cut off their finger and play than have it surgically repaired and sit out.

3. Carlton Fisk- Because he is the only S.O.B. on the planet that is tougher than Ronnie Lott. Played 20 plus seasons in the big leagues, all of them as a catcher.

Kirk Gibson- tough as nails on the diamond, and talk about a clutch player... winning that game when he came out of the Dodgers dugout in the 9th inning on a bad leg. I could watch that game over and over.

Jack Youngblood was also one of my favorites.

I can't believe not a single one of you mentioned Emmitt Smith, Bob Lilly, Drew Pearson, or Jay Novacek.

They're all solid, no doubt. Mine were the ones that I looked up to when I was in grade school.

I can't believe Lance Armstrong was mentioned. The guy thought riding a bike was more important than being a husband and father to his family.
