With the trend of a lot of the "marquee" athletes opting for the pros prior to their senior years, I wonder if the days of the 5-year redshirt are numbered and the average college career of star collegiate athletes will become 3 years. This could have a lot of effects on college planning and recruiting down the road. Makes you wonder if a highschool athlete could or would ever try leaving prior to graduation to play in college.

It is a good question. I am not sure when NFL can draft players but if Vince hadn't been red shirted he might have turned pro last year and then we may not have had the great run we did this year.

The NFL still has the three years removed from HS rule. So if they don't red shirt them at least they would get their three years out of them instead of two in some cases. A 18 year old kid's body and mind can not handle the punishment of the NFL. The NBA is different because there aren't as many collisions.

But the "big" money is still going to make them try to jump, if it is offered.

For skill positions such as RB, QB and maybe WR or CB, if you are a ture 5 star player then you will see the field your fish year. At QB it all depends on who is already on campus.

For OL it is essential to redshirt. The rare HS OL is ready for DI ball.
