SW girls win title at B-Lake tourney

BIG LAKE - A pair of down-to-the-wire wins over Coahoma and Reagan County allowed the Sweetwater girls to claim first place Friday at the Mary Tatum Invitational basketball tournament.

Sweetwater defeated Coa-homa, 50-44, in overtime to reach the finals, then edged Reagan County - the host of the tournament - by a 40-36 score for the title.

The two wins also gave the Lady Mustangs 14 in their last 15 games, and a 16-5 overall mark entering Satur-day's home game with Jim Ned, the first of three straight capped by the district opener against Merkel - one of the many heavyweights in 4-3A - this Friday.

Sweetwater trailed Coaho-ma 32-26 after three quarters and 39-37 in the final min-ute when Kaitlin Lawrence scored with just 13 seconds left to tie the game, 39-39, at the end of regulation and send the teams to overtime.

At that point, Blayre Hatley - the tournament's MVP - took over as she scored six of the Lady Mustangs' 11 points in overtime while also drain-ing 4-of-5 free throws and getting a couple of key steals.

Hatley finished with 11 points, while Lawrence and Tika Smith each had 10, Vivi-ana Castillo nine and Tracy Cowin and Dacy Ivy five.

Things were just as tight in the title game with Reagan County, as Sweetwater's lead was never more than five at the end of a quarter.

Cowin had 15 points while Smith - who along with Cas-tillo also made the all-tourna-ment team - had 13. Castillo scored five points, Lawrence three and Hatley and Ivy two apiece to complete the scoring for the Lady Mustangs.
