Grand Canyon to Get Glass Bridge

Fear of heights? This is definitely no place for you.

The all-glass, balcony-like "Skywalk"—shown in an illustration released in late August—will extend over the edge of the Grand Canyon, 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) above the Colorado River.

"The Skywalk will be an attraction unlike any other in the world," said Sheri Yellowhawk, CEO of the Grand Canyon Resort Corporation. The company is building the bridge in the Hualapai Indian Reservation on the south rim of the canyon.

The Skywalk is scheduled to open to the public in January 2006 as part of a new resort on the reservation. The resort, known as Grand Canyon West, is to include a re-created Indian village and a restaurant perched on the edge of the canyon. Tourism is the reservation's biggest source of income.

Grand Canyon West will be on the western edge of Grand Canyon National Park, about 120 miles (about 200 kilometers) from Las Vegas. But perhaps not even the Las Vegas Strip's over-the-top attractions will be a match for this glass-bottom walkway over the world's biggest gorge.

Thanks Aussie.....

You know...as fast as time seems to fly, I use this time at the end of the year (when work is slow) to reflect back and gather some thoughts and I really look for photos that are genuine and heart felt.

Life is so drastic sometimes, I think it's important to actually see it, so that as we go into the future, we can appreciate life even more.

I want to take this opportunity to wish eveyone here a very special holiday season. I hope the very best for each of you in 2006.

Thanks to Guy Beck for this.......

In Phoenix, Arizona, a 26-year-old mother stared
down at her 6 year old son, who was dying of
terminal leukemia. Although her heart was filled
with sadness, she also had a strong feeling of
determination. Like any parent, she wanted her
son to grow up and fulfill all his dreams. Now
that was no longer possible..
The leukemia would see to that. But she still
wanted her son's dreams to come true. She took
her son's hand and asked, "Billy, did you ever
think about what you wanted to be once you grew
up? Did you ever dream and wish what you would do
with your life?"

Mommy, "I always wanted to be a fireman when I grew up."
Mom smiled back and said, "Let's see if we can
make your wish come true."
Later that day she went to her local fire
department in Phoenix, Arizona, where she met
Fireman Bob, who had a heart as big as Phoenix.
She explained her son's final wish and asked if
it might be possible to give her six-year-old son
a ride around the block on a fire engine.

Fireman Bob said, "Look, we can do better than
that. If you'll have your son ready at seven
o'clock Wednesday morning, we'll make him an
honorary fireman for the whole day. He can come
down to the fire station, eat with us, go out on
all the fire calls, the whole nine yards! And if
you'll give us ! his sizes, we'll get a real fire
uniform for him, with a real fire hat-not a toy
one-with the emblem of the Phoenix Fire
Department on it, a yellow slicker like we wear
and rubber boots. They're all manufactured right
here in Phoenix, so we can get them fast."

Three days later Fireman Bob picked up Billy,
dressed him in his fire uniform and escorted him
from his hospital bed to the waiting hook and
ladder truck. Billy got to sit on the back of the
truck and help steer it back to the fire station.
He was in heaven. There were three fire calls in
Phoenix that day and Billy got to go out on all
three calls. He rode in the different fire
engines, the paramedic's van, and even the fire chief's car.
He was also videotaped for the local news
program. Having his dream come true, with all the
love and attention that was lavished upon him, so
deeply touched Billy that he lived three months
longer than any doctor thought possible.

One night all of his vital signs began to drop
dramatically and the head nurse, who believed in
the hospice concept that no one should die alone,
began to call the family members to the hospital.
Then she remembered the day Billy had spent as a
fireman, so she called the Fire Chief and asked
if it would be possible to send a fireman in
uniform to the hospital to be with Billy as he
made his transition.

The chief replied, "We can do better than that.
We'll be there in five minutes.
Will you please do me a favor?
When you hear the sirens screaming and see the
lights flashing, will you announce over the PA
system that there is not a fire? It's just the
fire department coming to see one of its finest
members one more time.
And will you open the window to his room?

About five minutes later a hook and ladder truck
arrived at the hospital and extended its ladder
up to Billy's third floor open window
16 firefighters climbed up the ladder into
Billy's room.
With his mother's permission, they
hugged him and held him and told him how much
they loved him.
With his dying breath, Billy
looked up at the fire chief and said,
"Chief, am I really a fireman now?"
"Billy, you are, and the Head Chief, Jesus, is holding your
hand,"
the chief said.
With those words, Billy smiled and said,
"I know, He's been holding my hand all day, and the angels have
been singing.."
He closed his eyes one last time.

Spurs Named Top Franchise

The San Antonio Spurs are the best franchise in sports, according to ESPN The Magazine’s fourth annual Ultimate Standings fan poll, an online poll ranking all 92 MLB, NBA and NFL franchises. This marks the second time the Spurs have come away with the honor since the debut of the poll in 2000 – making them the first repeat winner. The top 10 consists of two NBA teams, the Spurs and the Detroit Pistons (last year’s winner), five NFL teams and three MLB teams. The NHL was not included in the poll this year due to the lockout.
In addition to being named the top franchise, the Spurs also took home the No. 1 spot in three other categories - Fan Relations, Ownership and Players. Fans love Coach Gregg Popovich, who has moved up from No. 72 in the Coaching category to No. 3 since the rankings began in 2000. The Spurs finished third in the Bang for the Buck category, which, rather than being voted on by fans, is determined by wins in the past three years per revenues received directly from the fans.

"Fans told us louder than ever this year that they care more about owners who show their appreciation and players who act professionally on and off the field than pretty stadiums or even winning championships,” said Peter Keating, senior writer, ESPN The Magazine. “Our top-ranked teams, including the Spurs, have made fans believe in their commitment and effort. The bottom-ranked teams fall short in that effort.”

More than 30,000 fans participated in the Ultimate Standings poll online through ESPN.com from October to November, 2005, giving grades to their favorite teams. Fans voted in seven categories – Fan Relations, Ownership, Affordability, Stadium Experience, Players, Coaching and Winning. The Bang for the Buck category is based on financial analysis for three years calculated by the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center at the University of Oregon and ESPN The Magazine.

Top 10 Franchises:

San Antonio Spurs (last year’s rank: 2)
Detroit Pistons (last year’s rank: 1)
Pittsburgh Steelers (last year’s rank: 9
Indianapolis Colts (last year’s rank: 3)
Los Angeles Angels (last year’s rank: 5)
Atlanta Falcons (last year’s rank 7)
St. Louis Cardinals (last year’s rank 11)
Carolina Panthers (last year’s rank 12)
Atlanta Braves (last year’s rank: 16)
New England Patriots (last year’s rank: 4)

Tony Stewart wins the 2005 Nextel Cup.

2005 Stats: 4 Bud Poles, 5 wins, 17 top-fives, 25 top-10s

The good: Five wins in seven races -- and 13 consecutive races finishing in the top 10 -- all but sealed Stewart's fate as the title favorite. But the sweetest win for Smoke, no doubt, was his emotional victory at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where he led 44 laps and held off Kasey Kahne for the win. In cruising into the championship, Stewart became just the 14th NASCAR driver to win multiple Cup titles and joined Jeff Gordon as the only active full-time driver on that list.

The bad: Just prior to his mid-summer domination, Stewart had two streaks that had the opposite effect. A slide in April left him with three consecutive races of finishing 26th or worse. It happened again just a few months later, with finishes of 24, 15 and 29 right before his steak of top-10s. After the summer concluded, Stewart's only real speed bump was an 18th-place finish at Dover that dropped him to fifth in the points with eight races to go.

Belying his cocksure on-court attitude, Marbury displayed a side of his personality that few, if any, fans or players had ever seen when he broke down in tears while announcing a donation of no less than $500,000 to Hurricane Katrina victims. The Knicks point guard spoke of how the haunting images of crying children and babies floating in the water compelled him to make his donation, which is believed to be the largest in the league by any one player.

Nice: Ricky Williams
Miami Dolphins
Williams is one of the NFL’s most notorious players, so his good behavior since he returned to the Dolphins this season is worth noting. After taking a year off to find himself, Williams returned to Miami and is having a productive season for the young and improving Dolphins. The coaching staff can’t stop praising Williams for his work ethic and leadership. The image of him as a selfish, lazy wanderer is quickly fading from memory.

Naughty: Kurt Busch
NASCAR
When Kurt Busch was pulled over by a Phoenix police officer on Nov. 11 for driving a rental car erratically, he definitely wasn’t nice to him. According to the officer, Busch was belligerent and at one point uttered the now infamous phrase, "Don’t you know who I am?" Busch’s boorish behavior eventually prompted car owner Jack Roush to suspend Busch, the 2004 champ, for the final two races of the season.

Nice: Terry Bradshaw
Broadcaster
The Hall of Fame quarterback grew up in Louisiana and starred for Louisiana Tech, so he was more affected by Hurricane Katrina than most in the broadcasting world. However, the FOX NFL Sunday pregame host has gone the extra step and is working on putting together a potential ownership group that would attempt to buy the New Orleans Saints to ensure the franchise stays in Louisiana.

During a Redskins-Cowboys showdown, Howard Cosell called Washington receiver Alvin Garrett a “little monkey.” Although Cosell claims he often used the term to describe a small, quick player, many thought it was a racist comment. The controversy got the ’83 season off to an ugly start and it would end up being Cosell’s final year doing the show.
