Three Longhorns named NCBWA Preseason All-Americans

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Three University of Texas baseball players received 2006 Preseason All-American honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) on Friday, Dec. 16.

Juniors Kyle McCulloch (Houston, Texas) and Drew Stubbs (Atlanta, Texas) were tabbed first-team Preseason All-Americans, while sophomore Adrian Alaniz (Sinton, Texas) was earned third team accolades. Of note, these honors mark the second Preseason All-America nod of Stubbs' career, as he was named to the third team in 2005, and the first for both McCulloch and Alaniz. Additionally, with three players being selected among the three preseason teams announced, the Longhorns account for three of the nine Big 12 players recognized and three of the 54 student-athletes chosen nationally.

McCulloch, a first-team All-Big 12 selection and a member of the 2005 College World Series (CWS) All-Tournament Team, went 12-4 overall with a 2.92 ERA and 99 strikeouts over 138.2 innings of work last season. Stubbs, meanwhile, was named a 2005 third-team All-American after batting .311 with team-leading totals for home runs (11), runs scored (67) and stolen bases (32). Alaniz, who tossed the 19th no-hitter in school history on April 16, 2005, earned Freshman All-America laurels last year after posting an 8-3 record to go along with a 2.67 ERA and a pair of CWS victories.

Notably, both Stubbs and Alaniz were named to the "Watch List" for the 2006 Brooks Wallace Award, which is awarded to the nation's top player annually, during the month of November.
