I am going to go back and try and find some good articles and pictures of the 2005 season in high school football. If anyone has a story or a picture you want me to post, I'll be glad to do it...or try anyways. I think it's neat to reflect back on the seasons that made this year a memorable one!

I am going to try and keep this thread active until 1/1/07.

What a great season for the Monahans Loboes. Only one loss all year. Unfortunately for them, it was in the playoffs.

But I think this is one of my favorite pics of 2005. To me, it symbolizes a lot. Skye Green waiting on a second half kickoff, and in the background, the picture of the Mustang, which represents the whole town of Sweetwater and it's Mustang fans.....great picture. Go Roadrunner!

Michael Boydston's Southlake Carroll helmet.

Players are permitted to apply the stickers any way they like: Coach Todd Dodge says he never issues instructions or preferences.

As for Boydston: "I just try to get them as close together as possible," he said. "No real reason. I just think it looks better that way."

Most players fill in the helmet's white portion, then start on the green stripe running down the middle of the helmet. That's if they get that far – and most of them don't.

So what happens if a player fills his entire helmet (the Dragons are about to play their 16th game)?

"You give 'em to teammates."

• Filling up the helmet is a big deal: Not somuch for bragging and such. In fact, Boydston says the players don't talk about it.

But he says it is important to players because they all have the opportunity to purchase their helmets after the season. And a full helmet makes for a better keepsake.

The school charges only what it paid for the helmet, about $120 this year

Here was the AP poll back in August. Two different newspapers reporting on the same poll. LOL

Yesterday, the Associated Press released it's 2005 pre-season football poll. Here are the rankings for Class 3A: This poll was from the Abilene Reporter News. If you look at the 2nd poll from the Dallas Morning News, Sweetwater isn't in the rankings, and they claim it's the same AP Poll. Makes no sense to me. Which newspaper is correct in their reporting? I hope the Abilene reporter News is.

Loboes turn heads across state in Bi-District win over Snyder

By Randy Hogan-Staff Writer, The Monahans News, November 15,2005

The Monahans Loboes answered many critics' questions with a resounding 28-21 victory over Snyder Friday night to claim the Bi-District Championship at Grande Communications Stadium in Midland.

Monahans (11-0) came into the game as a three-point underdog, according to the Harris Ratings, and facing the #9 Tigers with the Bi-District title on the line for the third time in four years.

Snyder (9-2) used their hard-hitting, lightning-quick defense to propel them to the Class 3A semi-finals in 2004.

"It was really electric on the sideline during the game" Coach Mickey Owens said. "The thing we are really proud of is that it was the first time this season that we were behind. The kids came back and played unbelievably and answered the bell every time Snyder did something positive."

The game began with a controversial coin toss. Monahans won the flip and elected to defer to the second half.

Rather than take the ball first, Snyder chose the wind to start the game, allowing Monahans to receive the ball.

Sam Graves started the game with a 12-yard run for the Loboes, but the quick Snyder defense forced the Green to punt.

The Tigers took the ball on their own 29-yard line and drove 71 yards in 10 plays to take the early lead. On the drive, Snyder converted a key fourth down play to extend the series, and D'White Wells ran in from 25 yards out to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead.

The extra point kick attempt was good, and Snyder held a 7-0 lead on the Green with 5:50 to play in the first quarter.

The Loboes took possession on their own 11-yard line with: 52 remaining in the first quarter and moved the ball down to the Snyder 12-yard line before the drive ended on a third down interception by the Tigers.

The 20-play drive amassed 77 yards and consumed 9:26 on the game clock.

"Even though we didn't score on the drive, it gave out team some confidence that we could move the ball and do something in the second half," Owens said.

The Mean Green defense shut down the Tiger offense, forcing a punt with 1:57 to play in the first half.

On the first down from the Snyder 48-yard line, Chase Cornelius connected with a wide-open Isaiha Alford for the touchdown. Alford had beaten Tiger defensive back Garrett Pinson then side-stepped Pinson into the end zone.

"We felt like there were things we could take advantage of," Owens said. They are an extremely fast football team, and they took us out of our running game."

T.J. Brooks' extra point kick was good, and the Loboes had evened the game at 7-7 with 1:41 to play in the half.

Moments later, Devon Fann recovered a fumble after the Loboes leveled the Tiger receiver. Monahans could not sustain the drive and send Sean Merrick in to punt.

Seconds later, Anthony Cota intercepted Reigh's pass, giving the Loboes possession at the 46-yard line with :07 to play in the second quarter.

The Loboes had time for one more play, but Snyder intercepted the pass inside the five-yard line to end the first half tied at 7-7.

Monahans elected to receive the second half kickoff.

During the pre-game coin toss Monahans won and elected to defer their option to the second half.

Snyder opted for a short kick, and Cody Anthony returned the ball to the Tiger 40-yard line. The lightning-quick Snyder defense kept the Loboes off balance, forcing MHS to punt on their first possession.

Snyder took over on their own 25-yard line and drove the ball down to the Monahans 29-yard line before turning the ball over on downs. On fourth down and 10, Tiger running back will clay was stopped five yards short of the first down, diving the ball back to the Loboes.

The Tigers defense once again proved to be touch, forcing a Monahans punt.

Jeremy Torrez returned Merrick's punt into the Lobo end of the field, setting the Tiger offense up with excellent field position at the 44-yard line.

Two plays later, fullback Johnny Vasquez broke through the Lobo containment and rumbled 41 yards for a Tiger touchdown. The extra point kick was good, and Snyder led 14-7 with 2:44 to play in the third quarter.

Christ Smith kicked the ball deep to Anthony Cota, and the Lobo Speedster raced 90-yards to the end zone for a touchdown. On the return, Cota worked his way through the initial wave of tacklers, then used his speed to out run the Tigers to pay dirt.

Brooks' extra point kick was good, and the game was tied 14-14 with 2:29 to play in the third quarter.

Monahans, feeding off the momentum swing that the electrifying kickoff return ignited, slammed the door on the Snyder offense. The Lobes allowed only 3 yards on the drive, forcing the Tigers to punt.

Cornelius led the Green back on the field, starting from their own 21-yard line with only 43 seconds to play in the third quarter.

The Loboes pounded Roberson and Graves into the defense, also completing a pass to Graves for a key first down.

Facing third won and 11 from 20-yard line , Coach Owens sent his jumbo into the game. Expecting a running play, Cornelius stepped back and found Blake Whisnand wide open in the end zone.

"We bring the big guys in, and the defense expects us to try and run the ball," Blake Whisnand said. "I ran a flag to the corner of the end zone, and they weren't expecting it."

Brooks' extra point kick was once again good, and the Loboes took their first lead of the night 21-14 with 9:17 to play in the fourth quarter.

"Chase showed lots of poise tonight. He overcame some bad things," Simpson said. "When they stack it in the middle, you have to hit it behind them, and Chase made the play."

Feeling the pressure, Snyder responded with a scoring drive of their own. Matt Reigh led the Tigers on a 6-play, 65-yard drive for touchdown. Reigh capped the drive with a 25-yard quarterback keeper to draw the Tigers within one point.

Smith's extra point kick was good, and the game was tied 21-21 with 6:47 to play.

Monahans took the ensuing kickoff and began possession at their own 33-yard line. Graves blasted the Tigers with a 29-yard run to spark the Green offense. Russell Covington hauled in a key 14-yard pass on third down 14 with 3:20 to play in the game to extend the Lobo drive.

"They were the quickest defense we have faced," offensive line Coach Chris Simpson said. "I just told the kids to keep their heads up. We just kept pounding them, and in the fourth quarter we pushed that sled.

The Loboes went ahead for good with 1:55 to play in the fourth quarter, as Cornelius connected with Sean Merrick in the end zone.

"I was waiting for the pass," Sean Merrick said. "Our line did their job. Snyder bit on the dive, and we took advantage of it."

On the play, Monahans brought big Steven Richardson into the backfield, Snyder bit on the dive play, thinking run, and Cornelius showed great poise standing under pressure and finding his receiver for the score.

"It feels real good to win like this tonight," Cornelius said. "Everyone in the stadium thought we would run the ball," Chase Cornelius said. "We froze them with the play-action, and Sean was wide open."

Brooks' extra point kick was good, and the Loboes owned a 28-21 lead with the under two minutes to play in the game.

Brooks' kickoff sailed deep into the end zone, and the return man elected to run it out. Cody Anthony blasted the ball carrier at the 9-yard line, and Lobo fans came to their feet.

The Lobo defense applied big pressure, and Reigh could only throw the ball away to avoid a sack by Steven Richardson.

The defensive play that sealed the game for Monahans came as Tiger running back Will Clay broke the line of scrimmage and carried the ball up field for good yardage. Josh Rodriguez had Clay in his grasp, and Chris Collins lowered the boom on the flashy Snyder ball carrier. Collins' blast separated Clay from the ball, and Rodriguez recovered the fumble at the Tiger 38 yard line with 1:23 to play in the game.

Graves demoralized the Snyder defense with a 21 yard run to give the Loboes a huge first down, and Coach Owens forced the Tigers to use their remaining timeouts.

"We wanted to play out best game," Same Graves said. "We didn't start off very well, but we found our game and executed. We play as a team and are unselfish, so it doesn't matter who makes the yards."

Cornelius kneeled the final three snaps of the game, and the Loboes stormed the field to claim their Bi-District championship trophy.

"They are a great team and fought real hard, they were by far the quickest defense we have faced," Justin Parks said. "They said we haven't played anyone, but we've played someone now."

Coach Owens was all smiles after the dog fight with Snyder.

"Chase threw the ball real well," Owens said. "Who would have thought that we would have three passing touchdowns, a kickoff return, and no rushing touchdowns. It was a great team effort."

Monahans advances to face the Perryton Rangers (7-3), in the Area Round of the Class 3A playoffs Friday night at Plainview.

"Perryton will be a great team too, everyone is at this point in the season," Parks said. "They will be a great challenge for us."

Stories of life and death inspire Carroll

01:26 PM CST on Sunday, December 18, 2005

IRVING – After the state championship game two years ago, Southlake Carroll football fan Bob Bozman hugged defensive coordinator Charlie Stalcup. Carroll had just lost its first game in two seasons, but it was a celebratory hug.

It was a celebration of a decade-long friendship strengthened by each man's battle with cancer. A celebration of things to come.

"I'll never forget that," Bozman said. "As we were leaving, Stalcup turned, pointed his finger at me and said, 'Bozman, I'll see you next year.' "

Carroll was back at the state championship the next year, but Stalcup was not. He died in July 2004 from melanoma and became the inspiration for last season's Carroll team, which won a state title.

This year, it was Bozman's turn to inspire. As Carroll won its third state title in four years Saturday at Texas Stadium, words from Bozman were swirling in the players' heads. Words like "family" and "commitment" and "capturing the moment."

The words were from a letter Bozman sent a few weeks ago to Carroll coach Todd Dodge, who made copies and distributed them to his players. He thought his players might find inspiration in the story of a man who beat throat cancer.

Bozman fought the cancer 10 years ago with help of Stalcup, who at the time coached Bozman's son at Irving MacArthur. As Bozman battled the cancer, Stalcup called him each week to see how he was doing.

Bozman did the same for Stalcup when he was battling melanoma. And when his friend died, Bozman said it was a lesson on the fragile nature of life. A reminder to capture the moment of today, he said, and that's why he sent the letter to Dodge.

It inspired a few players, at the very least.

"I have the letter laminated and sitting on my desk at home," said senior quarterback Greg McElroy, who threw for 328 yards and four touchdowns Saturday.

It's not like Carroll needed Bozman's story for inspiration in its 34-20 victory over Katy. Carroll was playing for a state championship, after all. It was also playing against the one team it could call a nemesis. In Carroll's ridiculous 63-1 record over the last four seasons, the "1" to remember was a 2003 championship loss to Katy. Even Dodge admitted after the game that revenge was sweet.

And although the Carroll seniors are proud to be part of the program's tremendous legacy, proud to "protect the tradition," they were playing for their own shining moment. They wanted the opportunity few other high school players have – to walk off the field for the last time as a winner.

"I'm just happy we went out there and got our rings," McElroy said.

But when Katy's Will Thompson dashed 66 yards with a screen pass to cut the lead to 17-10 early in the third quarter, it was good to have Bozman on the sideline. He was both inspiration and a reminder of what Stalcup might say during a crucial point in the game:

"Coach Stalcup told us one day at a time and one play at a time," linebacker Justin Padron said. "When [Thompson] made that long run, there was nothing we could do about it afterward. We just had to come back out and shut them down."

The Carroll defense did that the rest of the game, holding Katy to a field goal and a meaningless last-second touchdown. The Carroll offense took care of the rest, scoring on three of its first five possessions of the second half to make sure the team achieved what Bozman expected.

"He said for everybody to keep dancing," defensive back Joseph Agnew said, "and that's what we did today."
