Gainesville hits roadblock in Class 3A Division I final

12:07 AM CST on Sunday, December 11, 2005
By DAVE LANCE / The Dallas Morning News

WACO – The first quarter wasn't even two minutes old and Gainesville had already given up more points than it normally allows in a game.

It would only get worse. Wimberley built a 14-point halftime lead behind Michael Buse's two touchdown runs en route to a 21-7 win in the Class 3A Division I state final Saturday night at Waco ISD Stadium.

More than 12,000 fans saw a defensive clinic, but it wasn't from the team with five shutouts. Instead it was Wimberley (15-0) that set the tone early with Colin Marburger's interception on the game's second play. Two plays later, Wimberley had a 7-0 lead on Buse's 18-yard run.

Gainesville (13-1), which entered the game allowing just 6.8 points per game, was unable to stop Buse, who finished with 109 yards rushing on 13 carries. His 72-yard touchdown run around left end with 2:04 remaining in the first half gave Wimberley a 14-0 lead.

Gainesville rushed for 150 yards, but was held to 3.3 yards per carry.

Gainesville running back Michael Miller, who scored on a fourth-quarter 2-yard run, said Wimberley's defense was the toughest he'd seen all year.

"But our line didn't have its best game," said Miller, who rushed for 68 yards on 18 carries. "We killed ourselves."

Whatever hope Miller's TD gave Gainesville was quickly negated on Wimberley's next possession. John Weldon's 11-yard touchdown pass to Len Thompson with 3:19 to play put the game away.

"There's always hope," Gainesville coach Jeff Cordell said. "That's the reason we're in the championship game. We never give up. They're just more physical than we are. My hat's off to them."

Gainesville had two first-half scoring opportunities, both ending in missed field goal tries. A missed 37-yard field goal try by Steven Arenas late in the first quarter ended a seven-play, 48-yard drive.

A 27-yard attempt by Arenas late in the second quarter hit the right upright.

In his third season as Gainesville's coach, Cordell has won 36 games, including the 2003 3A state final.

109-72=37

37 / 12=3.08

Take away the 72 yard breakaway and Buse was held to 3.08 yards per carry.

Sounds to me like BOTH defenses did the job. The difference was the turnover and one BIG play.

Hats off to Wimberly for taking home the gold. But I think BOTH teams put on a pretty good defensive clinic.

Wimberley had a break on the 72 yard breakaway. But G'ville got a break on they're TD also. An incredibly bad holding call was overlooked to setup that TD. If anybody gets a chance, watch the film on this one. It was a great game two of the best defenses that I have ever seen.

Wimberley looked tough this year. Gainsville must have been descent to only allow 21.
