Highland Park's playoff game will be televised

11:35 PM CST on Wednesday, December 7, 2005
By MATT JACOB / The Dallas Morning News

Highland Park's Class 4A Division I football championship game against Marshall will be televised live on KDFI-TV (Channel 27) at 3 p.m. Saturday.

The kickoff is one hour later than the previously scheduled starting time, so as not to conflict with FSN Southwest's broadcast of the Class 5A Division I contest.

The announcement came after Highland Park's allotment of 5,500 tickets for the game quickly sold out Monday and Tuesday. The game is Highland Park's first state championship appearance since the school won its last title in 1957.

Wachovia, which opened its first branch banks in the area last December, is sponsoring the broadcast.

Corporate communications director Joe Stroop said the company was first approached about sponsoring the broadcast this week when it was feared that many fans would not be able to get into Tyler's Rose stadium, capacity 12,000.

Additionally, the game will be shown on a live webcast at www.hpisd.org, and a watching party will gather in the Highland Park cafeteria at a time yet to be determined. The game also will be televised on a station serving the Tyler, Longview and Marshall markets.

Jon Heidtke, senior vice president and general manager for FSN Southwest, said broadcast rights were granted to Bear Wire Video. The company has produced Highland Park football games since 1983 and broadcasts them on the school district-operated cable channel.

The announcers will be former Highland Park head coach Don Richardson, former school defensive coordinator Richard Bohac and Art Finley, who has called Highland Park games for nine years.

Heidtke said initial attempts were made to have FSN Southwest show a Class 5A and 4A doubleheader, with the Highland Park-Marshall game to be played following the Euless Trinity-Converse Judson contest Saturday in Round Rock.

But Heidtke said Highland Park and Marshall coaches would not agree to play in Round Rock.

The television announcement came not long after Marshall sold its allotment of 5,500 tickets in less than three hours Wednesday morning.

Tickets bought by individuals in Marshall popped up on eBay soon thereafter. As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, there were seven ticket packages put up for auction, with asking prices of about $100 a ticket.
