Cameron is not pushing anything. The UIL contacted Cameron from what I understand.

Here's a thought. Maybe Cameron isn't pushing this? Anyone think of that?

After defeating Cameron-Yoe in the 3A football playoffs Saturday, The Hutto Hippos were facing a new challenge Monday after a news article in the “Austin American Statesman” sparked an investigation into possible University Interscholastic League rule violations.

If found guilty of rule violations the Hippos could be forced to forfeit their next game, a State Semi-Final matchup with top-ranked Cuero.

According to UIL Director of Public Relations Kim Rogers, no decision had been made at press time but the UIL had “not found any violation or wrongdoing on the part of Hutto.”

Hutto head football coach and Athletic Director Lee Penland was confident the UIL would not take any action against the Hippos.

“Basically, (UIL Director Charles Breithaupt) told us (Monday) that, through a lack of evidence or knowledge, that they were not going to do any more investigation and that he was recommending to the state executive committee that no action be taken,” Penland said.

“Mr. Breithaupt has to make his recommendation to the committee but I think that he thought that they would go by his recommendation that there was no evidence and he did not feel that we had violated any rules.”

Breithaupt was not available for comment on the issue and UIL officials would not provide a timetable for when any action might be taken.

The controversy began with an indirect quote in a Dec. 3 Statesman article attributed to Hutto quarterback Jeremy Kerley who allegedly said he and his teammates “often receive free meals at local restaurants.”

According to Penland, the article brought a swift response from the Cameron Yoemen. “Mr. Breithaupt said that school officials from Cameron had contacted them Saturday after the newspaper came out,” Penland said.

The article also quickly came to the attention of Hutto Superintendent Dr. David Borrer, who launched his own investigation into the situation Monday morning.

In a letter to the UIL Monday, Borrer said all 38 members of the Hippos football team were “separately and individually questioned as to if they received free food from local restaurants.” All 38 players denied they had ever received free meals.

In addition to the questioning of players, Borrer's letter said he sent two central office administrators to the 10 local restaurants open Monday morning - three others were closed - asking if varsity football players ever received free meals. According to Borrer's letter, all 10 stated they had never given free food to Hutto players.

Penland believes Kerley's statements may have been misunderstood or incorrect in the Statesman's story.

“He (Kerley) feels he was misquoted or misunderstood. He says he didn't say what the reporter said,” Penland said. “I know that we were misquoted several times in the American Statesman. They misquoted me several times.”

Penland feels that a simple misunderstanding of statements by Kerley may be to blame.

“I think it might have been somewhat of a misinterpretation,” he said. “We've been feeding our players pregame meals when we travel on the road, and that is allowed by the UIL. We have traveled to Houston and San Antonio and they get meals. Administrators from the central office went to all the local restaurants and they all categorically denied that they give free meals to football players. We made a report to the UIL and Mr. Breithaupt told us that he'd found that there was no evidence to support what the reporter said.”
