Why is it WINTRY and not WINTERY? English majors please explain. This bothers me!

NO, NO, NO. Gaurantee that I am not Bubba, never even met him. Plus I am way to young to be mistaken for Bubba (no offense Bubba).

Well, I am certainly not an English Major, but I will try to offer an "off the top of my head" explanation. I think "Wintery" is the correct spelling, but I think the modern penchant for brevity has caused the term to be shortened to "Wintry" much like the contraction "don't" for the words "do not", etc. It is much easier to say and spell--hence the popularity in our culture.
