Without having to play a game, the Sweetwater High School baseball team claimed the outright District 3-3A championship on Friday.

The Mustangs (8-1) clinched no worse than a tie for the 3-3A crown when they defeated Merkel 5-4 here on Thursday night in their final home appearance of the 2003 season. But the final piece to the puzzle fell into place on Friday when Seminole defeated Snyder 6-5, leaving both teams with 6-3 records. Sweetwater has a two-game edge over both teams with only one remaining.

Seminole's win also took some of the luster off Sweetwa-ter's regular season-ending game at Mustangs win 3-3A baseball championship

Snyder this Tuesday.

If Snyder had won Friday and also defeated Sweetwater, it would have created a first-place tie and forced the teams to meet again later this week to decide playoff seeding.

Sweetwater is in the playoffs for the second year in a row, but its last district title was in 1994. This is only the Mus-tangs' third district title since resuming baseball in 1988.
