1. Texas (12-0)
Once again, there is no real number one between Texas and USC right now, only No. 1 and No. 1A. The Longhorns were beyond dominant against a Colorado team that was overmatched after its first drive. Texas gets the slight edge, for the moment, over USC because of the lines; USC hasn’t even been close to seeing an offensive line like it’ll face in the Rose Bowl.
Best wins: 1) at Ohio State 25-22, 2) Texas Tech 52-17, 3) Oklahoma 45-12

2. USC (12-0)
When fully focused, this is one unstoppable team. The defense played one of its best games of the year keeping UCLA from getting any game-changing deep plays. Of course, life is a lot easier when you have someone to bail you out of trouble like Reggie Bush. On the down side, Matt Leinart has been a bit off, and now he has a month to sit on one of his least accurate performances of his career.
Best wins: 1) at Notre Dame 34-31, 2) at Oregon 45-13, 3) UCLA 66-19

3. Penn State (10-1)
For good and bad, Penn State will now get Florida State in the Orange Bowl. It’s good because the Nittany Lions match up far better with the Noles than Virginia Tech, but it’s bad because a win over the Hokies would’ve meant more national respect. Even so, a win will guarantee JoePa of a number three finish.
Best wins: 1) Ohio State 17-10, 2) Wisconsin 35-14 … Worst loss: at Michigan 27-25

4. Ohio State (9-2)
Ohio State was this close to playing in Pasadena. It seems like eons ago, but the Buckeyes not only battled Texas; they should’ve won. A top five finish, and possible a spot in the top three, would be a very, very nice season even with the disappointments against Texas and Penn State.
Best wins: 1) at Michigan 25-21, 2) Iowa 31-6 … Worst loss: at Penn State 17-10

5. Auburn (9-2)
How fantastic does that road win over Georgia look now? The Tigers deserve a better bowl game than it’ll likely end up with, but it’ll be a springboard to what should be a huge 2006 season. Now team matured like this one did from opening day until now.

Yep, looks like my boys are going to the wafflehouse.com bowl
this year. That would be the maize and blue.
