SL Carroll - 37 Plano - 27

IRVING – Sophomore running back Tre’ Newton isn’t the focal point of Southlake Carroll’s high-powered offense. At least not yet.
Try telling that to upset-minded Plano.
Newton carried the ball 31 times, the most by any running back has in the Todd Dodge-era, as No. 1 Carroll pulled away for a 37-27 victory over Plano in front of a crowd of 34,783 in the Class 5A Division II Region I final on Saturday afternoon at Texas Stadium.
Carroll (14-0) needed Newton’s tough running to hold off a stubborn Plano team that had a 20-16 lead at halftime and a 27-24 lead after three quarters. Carroll quarterback Greg McElroy passed for 349 yards, but it was the running of Newton – and McElroy too – that sealed Carroll’s 30th consecutive victory.
Newton had 143 yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 2-yard touchdown run with 10:36 left in the game. He also had 37 yards on seven carries with Carroll holding onto a 31-27 lead and then a 37-27 lead.
“That child grew up today,” said Dodge, who is trying for his third state championship in six years at Carroll.
Plano had allowed seven rushing touchdowns in 13 games this season. Carroll scored its last three touchdowns on the ground, two of them by Newton. McElroy, who rushed for 82 yards on 12 carries, put the game away with a 7-yard touchdown run with 3:39 left.
“We just refused to lose today,” McElroy said. “We knew they were going to be a great team, so we had to stay together.”
Plano (13-1) gave Carroll its first challenge of the postseason. Plano led 20-16 at halftime against a Carroll team that had outscored its opponents 110-0 in the first half.
Carroll bolted out to a 13-0 lead, but Plano, unlike most of Carroll’s opponents, didn’t wilt. Plano quarterback Mark Sfikas hooked up with Alex Lott for a 22-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 13-7.
After Plano linebacker Bryce Ryan came up with an interception, Justin Jordan gave Plano a 14-13 lead with 1:22 left in the first quarter on a 6-yard touchdown run.
Carroll took the lead back at 16-14 on Ryan Murray’s 27-yard field goal, but Plano regained the momentum before halftime when Sfikas stunned the Texas Stadium crowd with a 76-yard touchdown pass to Greg Rideuax.
Plano built on that boost early in the third quarter. Safety Maxim Dinka intercepted McElroy on Carroll’s first play of the quarter. That set up Sfikas’ 4-yard run to put Plano ahead 27-16 with 9:08 left in the third quarter.
Carroll’s defense then turned the game. Plano had two first downs in the second half and standout tailback Justin Jordan, who had 74 yards in the first half, had just 28 after halftime.
“We really couldn’t get it going in the third quarter,” Plano coach Gerald Brence said. “We couldn’t sustain a drive.”
