An Analysis of State Baseball and Softball Tournamens

I noticed that in 2003 3A baseball and softball the teams that went to state all won their district. In fact in softball only one runner up in 2A got to state and they lost in the semis. In baseball two runner ups are at state and that is Hamlin in 1A and Denton Ryan in 4A. I don't know if this year is typical but it appears that very few runner ups get to state and no third place teams got to state.

As far as third place teams, I'd say this isn't unusual at all. Second place teams making it I can see on occasion. Sometimes the second place team in a particular district is better than three or four district champs in the hunt.
