Smoaky.com has learned that Gladewater athletic director and head football coach David Husmann told his players today that we won't be back next season.

Husmann told the team this morning..."it was time for a change."

Husmann told me he would be reassigned within the Gladewater ISD system once they find his replacement and/or until he finds another job.

Husmann was 50-41 in eight-years at Gladewater High School, including five playoff appearances.

The Bears lost to Liberty-Eylau in the first round of the Class 3-A Division One playoffs this season.

His 2001 team lost to Commerce in the Class 3-A semifinals.

He was at Schulenburg from 1985 to 1997. Record was 139-31-1 and won state in 91 and 92.

This has been known through the grapevine since around the time Gilmer beat Gladewater during the Yamboree.

This is a perfect illustration of how "making the playoffs" is a meaningless statement anymore. I don't know that his teams ever failed to make the playoffs in eight seasons there. They made it to the quarterfinals in 2001.

I wouldn't want to have been Jack V. Murphy's successor either. But I think he just burned out. Coaching is a young man's game. One reason we have this controversy over the conservative think tanks telling the public schools they need to "reform" because they are top-heavy with administrators is because THEY ARE TOP-HEAVY WITH ADMINISTRATORS aka "reassigned coaches" in many cases.

Husmann did get to the state finals in 2001 and lost to Commerce. That is also the last time the Bears beat Gilmer, and did it soundly in the opening game of the season. His quarterback, Jonny Louvier, was a player in basketball as well as football.

Gilmer did not just beat Gilmer during the Yamboree, they won by a wide margin, 48-13, and played the reserves most of the second half.

However, I think there must be more to it than that. Lot of cross fertilization between staffs in this area of East Texas. Two of Gilmer's new coaches this year came from here. One of those worked at Gilmer but left when Traylor was hired and is back.

There are still at least two ex-Gilmer coaches at Gladewater.

Gladewater made it to the quarterfinal round. Commerce was the state champion, but Gladewater did not play them in the title game. La Grange did.

Once you get past Gilmer in that district, the Oklahoma School for the Dead could earn that thirs spot.

Yes, I said DEAD, not deaf.
