Over the Thanksgiving holiday I spent some time in Oklahoma and got to read up on a very interesting story going on there.

Shawnee Wolves is a class 5A school in Oklahoma that is favored to win the State Championship. They are led by their field general Tucker Brown who also happens to be the coaches son. Brown is one of the leading passers in the state, throwing for more than 28-hundred yards and 31 touchdowns. Another words without him, there is no chance for a championship.

Last week with 19 seconds to play in Shawnee's 14-10 win over Tulsa Washington last Saturday night, a Hornet player (No. 9) leaped over the line of scrimmage as Brown was kneeling to the ground to run out the clock. The Hornet player grabbed Brown's helmet and Brown retaliated with a kick.

Click Here to See the Video (http://newsok.com/video/1684236/)

On the previous play, the same Hornet player punched Shawnee offensive lineman Zach Howard but no flag was thrown and no ejection issued.

After the referees consulted one another they ejected both players from the game. In Oklahoma an ejection carries a 2 game suspension. There are only 2 games left in the playoffs.

The school appealed the suspension to the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OK's UIL). The OSSAA upheld the suspension and Tucker Brown was ineligible for the Saturday night's (7:30) Class 5A state semifinal game versus Tulsa East Central at Choctaw High School.

Late Wednesday Browns dad and Coach of Shawnee Billy Brown took his case to the courts and won reinstatement through a decision rendered by District Judge Paul Vassar following a hearing in Pottawatomie County District Court. Vassar granted a temporary injunction restraining the OSSAA from enforcing its suspension policy. There was no time for the OSSAA to appeal the courts decision because they were closed Thurs - Sun for the Holidays.

In an almost unheard of practice the OSSAA postphoned the Saturday night game indefinatley until they can file an appeal with the Oklahoma Supreme Court on Monday. I will continue to follow this court case and keep you updated, but just thought this was very interesting in the world of High School Football.

I hope the kid gets to play. Glad to see that the coach took it to court. The school UIL in oklahoma should not have postponed the game. Let them play.

i take the other side on this one, kid shouldn't of lost his temper....he knew what the penalty is, and he should own up to it.....with stats like he has he shouldn't have too much problem getting recruited....

oh and btw
rivals doesn't mention him...

You should be able to find this story @ www.newsok.com then go to sports - highschool.... I read about this the other day... (you have to register, but it is not a pain)

Duhhhh, I went back and watched the video after I posted this....that is the link

It also says the coach from the Tulsa team stayed in the refs huddle while they were deciding on the penalty.... ....

There were several incidents that occured during this game.

Bottom line is the kid kicked, or attempted to kick an opponent. That calls for an automatic ejection in thier rules (and in Texas' as well). The difference is their UIL has a rule taht then says the kid is out for the next 2 games. We don't have that rule in Texas.

This is a rule that all the schools know about and which has been used countless times. There is NO way this dispute should be allowed to continue through the courts. Start opening the door to judicial intervention in kid's games and we are all going to lose.

This is as bad as state courts here getting involved in eligibility issues.

Wasn't it the end of the game (or half time) if he was taking a knee?? I understand emotions are running high, etc...but c'mon you gotta use your head, especially if he is the only reason they are where they are.

Couldn't agree with you more.
Bottom line is Brown retaliated by kicking the other player. If he would have kept his anger in check he would have never been ejected. It is called having more class and he obviously did not.

Update on the Okie mess:

From MSNBC.com:

Drama hits Oklahoma state football playoffs
State Supreme Court to rule whether QB should be suspended for kickingUpdated: 5:34 p.m. ET Nov. 29, 2005
OKLAHOMA CITY - It isn’t exactly instant replay, but the Oklahoma Supreme Court will be reviewing film of a high school playoff game to determine if a quarterback should be suspended for kicking an opposing player.

The Oklahoma Class 5A playoffs are on hold until the court rules.

The state’s highest court agreed Tuesday to take the case and expedite a ruling on an appeal of a lower court opinion that reinstated Shawnee quarterback Tucker Brown.

Gov. Brad Henry, a graduate of Shawnee High School, even weighed in on the controversy, saying a court fight could have been avoided by some “reasonable officiating.”

Under an order signed Tuesday by Chief Justice Joseph M. Watt, Dec. 10 is the earliest a Class 5A playoff game between Shawnee and Tulsa East Central High School could be played, a two-week delay.

Danny Rennels, executive director of the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association, canceled last weekend’s semifinal game between the two teams after a judge’s order blocked the association from enforcing its suspension policy against Brown.

Mark Grossman, attorney for the OSSAA, said Pottawatomie County Judge Paul Vassar made a bad call in overturning the two-game suspension.

“Neither the association nor the court are supposed to be acting like an instant replay official here,” Grossman said.

Brown, son of Shawnee coach Billy Brown, was ejected for violating the OSSAA’s anti-fighting rule with 19 seconds left in Shawnee’s Nov. 19 game in which Shawnee defeated Tulsa Washington, 14-10.

Brown was kneeling in an effort to run out the clock when Washington’s Jermaine Holmes jumped over the line of scrimmage, grabbed Brown’s helmet and pulled him to the ground. Brown responded by kicking Holmes.

Rennels said the rule is “indisputable. If you kick someone ... you sit out. It’s just that simple.”

Vassar ruled against the OSSAA in a case brought by Suzanne Leigh Brown, the quarterback’s mother.

Henry, who watched the game, said he understood the OSSAA “has a need to uphold the ruling of their officials” but implied that officials overreacted by ejecting Brown.

“It’s just sad. It’s a shame that this ended up in the courts and it probably could have all been avoided by just some reasonable officiating at the end. That’s all I’m going to say,” the governor said.

just think of the chaos if these officials' call is overturned and the kid gets to play ...

If the court decides to direct the kid be allowed to play, hopefully they will do so based on some problem in the way the OSSAA rules are written. Those could be changed to prevent future court challenges. But if they get involved in the specifics of the game, i.e. another player might should have been ejected for fighting but was not, or he did not actually do anything worthy of an ejection, then the door is opened for major problems.

I was on the Shawnee kid's side until I watched the video. He had plenty of time to control himself, he took his time to measure the kid up before he kicked him. I thought that maybe he kicked the kick to get kid off of himself from reading but that was a blatant kick. Two wrongs do not add up to one right and that is a lesson that the QB, all his teammates, and his father/coach need to learn.
