View Full Version : Wylie/Gainesville - random thoughts ....

good game, exciting to the end - scroll down for a pic ....... some random thoughts ::

- Wylie QB is GOOD ..... but it was obvious his support cast was not up to Gainesville's talent level. his receivers let him down BIGTIME. 3-4 potential game changing drops

- Gainesville defense is GOOD ..... but not nearly as dominant as I expected them to be. Thought Wylie did a good job blocking Franklin - yeah he had some nice hits

- WANTED: INSTANT REPLAY! play of the game? Keenum's TD run in the 4th qtr, no question about that. would also loved to have seen replays of some of Miller's runs when he bulldozed Wylie defenders ...

- game was well officiated IMO

- where was the crowd? perfect football weather on a Saturday night but not a big crowd.

- Gainesville uniforms - ugh. didn't like Wylie's either (just don't care for the all one color look)

- but for a neutral observer I had a blast. love that playoff atmosphere.

- one more thing ... SUPER BOWL NACHOS !!!!!

Gainesville - 25 Abilene Wylie - 22

IRVING – Gainesville running back Michael Miller scored three touchdowns and rushed for 158 yards to lead Gainesville to a 25-22 win Saturday in the Region I, 3A Division I final, Saturday at Texas Stadium.
Gainesville (12-0) will play Texarkana Liberty Elyau (10-2) in the Division I, 3A state semifinal. Abilene Wylie ends its season 10-3.
Wylie quarterback Case Keenum made an improbable 38-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, but Wylie couldn't overcome two key Gainesville sacks. Keenum scored two rushing touchdowns and threw for another - a 43-yard touchdown pass to Russell Felts that gave Wylie a 15-8 lead in the second quarter.
Gainesville came back to tie the game on Miller's second touchdown of the game, this one on a 13-yard run.
Keenum led Wylie with 88 rushing yards in 11 carries. He was 11-for-20 passing for 185 yards and a touchdown.
Gainesville quarterback Jacob West didn't throw a lot, but was effective when he did, finishing 5-for-10 for 115 yards. His 44-yard pass to Kellin Kemp in the first half set up Gainesville's first touchdown.

The backup QB was also a sr. Also there were alot more kids playing both ways this season. Gonna be alot of spots. There are so many kids that will be hard to replace. Besides Keenum the kid that I hate to see go the most is #27 Austin Sayre. This kid made play after play after play for the last two years.

I'm sure they'll regroup and have another successful year next year. They always do.

Me and Adidas were talking on the drive home and Wylie only returns Edwards, Felts, and Smith on offense and only Edwards on defense. I think. There will be many shoes to fill next year but Wylie will be back. They also find out how to. Great game to both teams.

sooo my thoughts on the game....well this game was exactly what anicipated, neither team blew the other out and was a fight till the end. I think that if Keenum wouldnt have seperated his shoulder, while hurdling people and diving to the endzone, it might have been a different outcome but none the less it was a great game and wish i coulda been on the field again...

congrats to Gainesville for the win and being the only team to ever beat wylie in the playoffs for the past 3 years...

according to some on the Wylie sideline they turned in 916....that'll be close...

my thoughts are pretty much the same as everyone else...Keenum is the real deal....I was standing on the Gainesville sideline during that amazing run and one guy looked at me and said, "that kid is the truth"

all I could do was agree...I've seen it before and I thought he was gonna lead them back again....but the Gainesville D stepped up and made some big plays...I was impressed with the Gainesville D....Wylie had the one good drive to start the game...then their second TD was scored on an absolute genious play call....the last TD well we know what happened....Gainesville's offense was just good enough....nice combo with Miller and Franklin...Wylie did a good job containing Jacob West....

If Wylie turned in 916 that will keep them in 3A. I don't see 3A going up from 899 cutoff two years ago to just 916 in 2006.
If they move that top number I think it will climb to around 940 to 950.
Look at the trend in past realignment years.

This was the game of the year for me! This game had everything in it that you could ever want. This game was not over till the very end and it's sad that someone had to lose!!! I was very impressed with the Wylie Q.B. Keenum. Not only did he pass so very accurate(with many of his passes dropped), but that run for a touchdown!!! That was the play of the game no doubt. Gainesville will have to rebuild next year just like Wylie, with a huge class of seniors on the team. Congrats. to the Abilene Wylie team and may you have another great year in 2006! For Gainesville, a very good win over a great football team. Go big red, good luck on the road to state!!!

Great game! Could have gone either way at the end! Wylie will come back next as they always do no matter if it's 3A or 4A.

Gainesville go get state for Region 1, show the rest of 3A we are for real. Go Gainesville!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe the JV team went 8-2 or 9-1.. they were pretty good.. Though I don't think they will be a state contender next year, they will still be a tought team

I can understand that i believe he has some bigger plans for himself. and he deserves to go to a townl that will sink a little Money into its much deserving football program it is a dam shame that this town of gainesville old folks, would not sink a dime into the school football and other sports programs. it is embarassing to have to play at that stadium it sucked 20 years ago! Well a least we are getting a new school!! so if its true, and he leaves i hope him nothing but the best!! he is without a doubt a GREAT COACH. and will win whever he ends up!

I heard that rumor too.. I hope its not true, but he has done a great job here and does deserve to move up in the coaching ranks.. Coach Cordell is the best coach Gainesville has ever had, and I hope the school board can convince him to stay..

No doubt about it he is the Best Coach we ever had! and to be honest! He deserves better and i hope he gets it. The kids deserves better. and The Gainesville and any other FANS that have to go to that field and watch their teams play! But it makes all the sense in the world for him to leave! and it will be intresting to see where he goes. It will be funny to watch him get a better job than Coach Copeland! Newman Smith! boy that was a smart! One more year there and coach cordell will hire him for his Staff:D

i think cordell is awesome, but to say he is the best ever after 3 years is going overboard. if you say only coaches that win championships are great coaches, your way off. just because Coach T didn't win a championship does nothing to discredit his resume. he got there i think 3 times. one lose was to cuero who had a record of 44 wins in a row at the time. one lose was to Brownwood, enough said. i forget who the other one was to. don't over do calling Cordell the greatest coach ever after just 3 years.

Another thing, there's a big difference in playing whitesboro and pottsboro every year and playing Mckinny, Sherman, Denison and other great teams that was in Gainesville's district in the 70's. Cordell has had 3 years of playing in an easy district.

I believe Cordell is the best coach Gainesville has ever had.. Although I havn't seen every coach, I do believe that it takes alot to win the big one, and Cordell has already done that.. If cordell was to stay here long enough, who knows how many state championships Gainesville would be a part of.. and to say that playing in a weak or tough district has anything to do with how to measure a coaches ability is foolish.. When McKinney, Sherman and Denison was in a district with Gainesville they were all in the same classification, its not like they were a 3a school playing 5A's, and besides that, do you think that cordell wouldn't be able to beat those schools today despite their size now?? Its not cordell's fault that 2 of the schools in our district happen to be a couple of the worst in state.. but when he faces a good team he steps it up and does a great job in getting the kids excited and prepared for the game, and that is something that those other coaches couldn't do..

Look i like the old coaches and yea i can see your point they were good caoches! and yea gainesville has a soft district. but 2003 and this years teams are not as talented as some of the other teams of the 70s. You ever read Gordan woods book? he even said that in 78 gainesville was the better team and still no champion ship! And coach T. is a dam good coach and even a better man, Butin the end you got too look at the facts. Coach Cordell has done something that neither of the others 2 coachs have done and he did it with less. not to say gainesville has no talent because they have talent!!! but not the talent of 74 through 78.

There is one thing that will make a coach really think about staying in 3A. MONEY. Remember guys, the Texas teachers retirement is based on your last 3 to 4 years pay.
Think Sandifer down at Wylie isn't raking it in?
What about the guy at Stephenville? Can't remember his name but he is making a large paycheck at a small 4A school. Stephenville has the use of Tarleton State's stadium but it's not like they have some state of the art practice facility.

rod pegeus, back up in college, barely 2nd team, but probably the best athlete from gainesville ever. doug carr, bad knee's, did nothing in college, charles ray jackson, had elementary music teacher do his homework, when they counted on him in the state game, he couldn't come thru, couldn't cut it in college, tolly royal, benefited by playing with better players, walter bailey, your right.

You would be surprised at what he is making, and you wont be surprised at how high it is. Im not posting the number so if you really want to know you can go look it up yourself its a part of public record.

As far as the Stephenville Coach... Briles he was making a pretty penny back in the day. Within 10,000 of six figures.
