The transition from football to basketball will be on hold for a week for the Palestine Wildcats.

After finishing the football season Friday night, Palestine head basketball coach Tommy Allison has decided to give his players a week off before starting basketball.

“The week off is a good transition time from one sport to another,” Allison said. “All our basketball players played football, so they have been going hard at it since the beginning of August. They need some time off.”

Allison spent the beginning of this week finding out who is going to be playing and starting to issue equipment.

As of Monday afternoon, Allison said he already had 40 non-freshman players interested in playing basketball.

“It is good to have lots of people interested because it helps keeping the program moving forward,” Allison said. “But it is also tough because we are going to have to cut some players.”

Palestine’s first day of practice will be Monday and then the Wildcats will travel to Fairfield Tuesday and then play in the Mabank Tournament over the weekend.

Allison also has the challenge of figuring out what he has on his team as the Wildcats only have a few players returning from last year’s varsity team.

“We are going to have to use practice and game time to figure out our personnel,” Allison said. “We are going to be learning on the fly.”

Allison said the goal for the next month was to prepare for the start of district, which is on Dec. 30 at Central.
