Fairfield's hot shooting too much for Westwood

FAIRFIELD — The athleticism of the No. 7 Fairfield Eagles was too much for the Westwood Panthers Monday night.
Fairfield (3-0) defeated Westwood 93-62 with four players scoring in double digits.
Jarrett and Alfraid Manning along with Asa Douglas scored 13 points a piece while Ben Sturtavent put down 10 as the Eagles shot 64 percent from the field.
“Our kids did a good job tonight,” Fairfield head coach Joel Worley said. “Our defensive pressure helped us early on and created more shots.”
Westwood, who was held to just 21 points in the first half, got a game-high 24 points from Gralyn Crawford, but had 15 turnovers in the first half. Westwood (0-3) was held to a 45-percent field goal percentage, shot 48 percent from the free-throw line and 20 percent from behind the three point arch.
“We have to get better on getting quicker at inbounding the ball,” Westwood head coach David Reed said. “I thought our kids played hard, but there is a reason Fairfield is ranked No. 7.
“They have a lot of talent.”
Westwood was held to just 12 field goal attempts, hitting six field goals, in the first half. The Eagles went 12-of-15 from the field in the first quarter and was a perfect 4-4 with free throws as Fairfield took a 31-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
“We take a lot of pride in our free throw shooting,” Worley said. “Being able to make your free throws is a sign of a good shooter.”
Westwood was held without a point until Tyler Coates hit a free throw with 4:48 left in the first quarter. Brandon Ellis hit Westwood’s first field goal of the night and went on to score half of the Panthers points in the first quarter.
The Panthers’ shooting struggles continued in the second quarter, hitting just 2-7 field goals and was 1-7 from the three-point line.
Fairfield’s hot shooting cooled down in the second quarter, but its hot free throw shooting continued. The Eagles hit 7-9 free throws and had a first half free throw percentage of 85 percent.
Fairfield took a 59-21 lead into the locker room at halftime. Douglas scored all of his 13 points in the first half to lead all scorers. Alfraid Manning had 10 while Ellis led Westwood with eight points at halftime.
“Our shot selection was not very good tonight,” Reed said. “Our court spacing also wasn’t very good.
“We have a lot of speed, but not a lot of size and we need to learn how to take advantage of that.”
In the second half, Crawford found his niche, hitting 5-7 field goal attempts. Crawford scored 18 points in the second half and was just 2-9 from behind the three point line.
Fairfield, resting most of its starters, continued its hot shooting in the third quarter, hitting 7-9 field goals. The Panthers scored 17 points in the third quarter.
Westwood outscored Fairfield 24-15 in the fourth quarter with all five starters for Fairfield on the bench.
“We have sold our kids on the fact we have 10 starters,” Worley said. “All play the same number of minutes and they all have that trust factor that any of them can go out and perform.”
Fairfield will travel to Grapeland today with the junior varsity tipping off at 5 p.m. Westwood will be off until after the Thanksgiving holiday when it travels to Madisonville Dec. 1 for the Madisonville Tournament.
