When the large herds of buffalo roamed the plains, they often waited for the weaker and slower ones to catch up.
However if white hunters, mountain lions or indians came upon the herd, the easiest ones for them to kill were the weaker, slower ones. The benefit to the herd was that then they were able to move about faster and more efficiently since they didn't have to wait on the slow ones.
In the same way, although it's been proven that alcohol can kill human brain cells, this is actually beneficial. By killing your slower brain cells, the remainder of your brain will operate faster and more efficiently. At least that's how I see it.
