Garland grinds out win
Defense keeps Carter ground game in check to help avenge loss

12:11 AM CST on Saturday, November 19, 2005
By TIM MacMAHON / The Dallas Morning News

IRVING – Garland beat Carter at its own game when it counted.

In a slugfest at Texas Stadium, Garland avenged a nondistrict loss with a 12-7 victory in a Class 5A Division II Region II area-round game Friday night.

Garland (10-2) never allowed Carter (11-1) to get into an offensive rhythm. Carter finished with a season-low 138 rushing yards, well below half its season average.

"Carter's attitude and mentality is that they're going to grind you into submission," said Garland coach Jeff Jordan, whose team advances to face the Leander-Copperas Cove winner at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Waco ISD Stadium. "We're pretty good at that, too. Our kids took that as a personal challenge and rose to the occasion."

Carter, No. 8 in the 5A state poll, made a special-teams miscue to seal its second-round exit for the second consecutive season. Carter roughed the punter with 1:17 remaining, allowing Garland to run out the clock instead of giving Carter quarterback Michael Crabtree a chance to engineer a comeback drive. Carter botched the snap on an extra point that would have tied the score in last season's 28-27 loss to Mesquite.

But Carter needed a miraculous comeback because of a dominant game by the Garland defense. Garland twice halted Carter drives inside the 20 during the scoreless second half.

Carter's best two offensive linemen – seniors Demarcus Love (6-5, 260) and Curtis Bailey (6-7, 340) – watched their high school careers end from the sidelines. Love suffered a season-ending foot injury several weeks ago, and Bailey didn't play in the second half after injuring his ankle.

Garland's front seven, led by defensive tackle Brandon Antwine, consistently whipped Carter's makeshift line.

"They won the battle of the pits," Carter coach Allen Wilson said. "That's the one you've got to win in these types of ballgames."

Garland built its lead by halftime in large part because of great field position.

Safety John Murphy forced a fumble on the first play from scrimmage, with safety Tim Crosby's recovery giving Garland the ball at the Carter 42-yard line. The ensuing drive ended with a 33-yard field goal.

Dante Sloan's 6-yard touchdown run on fourth down capped a nine-play, 45-yard drive and gave Garland a 10-0 lead 10 minutes before halftime.

Carter responded by marching 72 yards for a touchdown. Michael Hicks had four carries for 50 yards on the drive, including a 14-yard touchdown run.

Carter gift-wrapped the final points of the half, snapping the ball through the end zone for a safety. Carter was punting from its end zone after it was pinned on its 1-yard line.
