HOUSTON -- Tim Redding got a pleasant surprise Thursday when he found out that he would be the fifth starter in the Houston rotation, joining Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte, Roy Oswalt and Wade Miller.
Redding thought he would be battling left-hander Jeriome Robertson, a 15-game winner as a rookie last season, Brandon Duckworth, a hard-throwing young right-hander acquired from Philadelphia in the Billy Wagner trade, and lefty Carlos Hernandez for the final spot in the rotation when Spring Training begins in one month.

Thanks for the info. I see I'm not the only one keeping late hours today.

I totally disagree with this statement. Let the players battle it out in spring training and the winner gets the job. I wonder how Robertson, Duckworth and Hernandez feel about this decision? What if one of these guys has a great spring? Sorry, we already promised Redding the 5th spot.

I predict Hernandez will steal the 5th starter job.

Look what happened to Reynolds last year. He had a spot, but lost it. Redding can still lose that spot. I hope that he earns it, but right now it's his spot to lose.
