I was thinking the same thing even though the only one of those schools that isnt 30 minutes from Richardson is HP and some Southlake games. Gaineville is a good 60-70 miles form Dallas unless you want to get into the debate of what's Dallas and what isn't haha

Tarpons face tough challenge against Devine in 3A area playoffs
By Roy Hess
The Brownsville Herald

November 18, 2005 — The Port Isabel Tarpons picked the perfect time to play their best game of the season last Friday night against West Oso in the Class 3A Division II bi-district playoffs.

A 41-14 triumph over West Oso at Kingsville’s Javelina Stadium allowed the Tarpons to capture their fifth straight bi-district title plus gain momentum and confidence for tonight’s area-playoff matchup against the Devine Warhorses.

“I liked the way we came out ready to play hard for four quarters (against West Oso),” said PI head coach Monty Stumbaugh, whose ballclub improved to 5-6 with the victory. “Our offense played well and our defense got the job done. I think it showed our kids that it’s within themselves and that they can play (well).

“We played the way you’ve got to play when you’re in the playoffs, so we were excited about that,” he added. “Our kids definitely stepped it up.”

Stumbaugh said the Tarpons played their best game of the season.

PI now faces a 9-2 Devine ballclub that repeated as the District 29-3A champion this season with a 5-0 record. The same night the Tarpons were beating West Oso, the Warhorses spotted Goliad a 7-0 lead before roaring back for a 42-7 bi-district win.

PI and Devine meet at 7:30 tonight at Buccaneer Stadium in Corpus Christi. The winner advances to the third round of the playoffs to face either Needville (8-3) or Liberty Hill (8-2).

“Devine has a very good team,” Stumbaugh said. “They’re big up front and their running backs run tough. On film, sometimes it looks like they run a lot and other times they appear to be more balanced. They use numerous offensive sets. You may see them in the wishbone or with no backs in the backfield. They shift a lot.”

The Warhorses are in the playoffs for the fourth straight year. Chad Quisenberry is in his second season as Devine’s head coach. A year ago, the Warhorses finished 11-2 and reached the third round of the state playoffs before losing 42-24 to Liberty Hill.

Devine returned all 11 starters on offense and defense from last season’s team.

The Warhorses are led by quarterback Dustin Burleson, a 5-foot-11, 160-pound senior. Against Goliad last week, Burleson passed 20 yards for a touchdown and ran 11 and 4 yards for two other scores. He completed 12-of-16 passes for 232 yards and rushed for 57 yards on 11 carries as the Warhorses amassed 480 yards of offense.

Another standout for Devine is wide receiver/free safety Kyle Muniz (sr., 6-2, 165), who finished the regular season with 11 interceptions while catching 40 passes for 679 yards and six TDs.

The Warhorses have four players on the offensive line who weigh 230 pounds or more.

Stumbaugh knows the Tarpons will be facing a big challenge.

“We eliminated turnovers and protected the football (against West Oso),” the PI coach said. “We’ll need to play mistake-free ball this week, too.”

Against West Oso, the Tarpons led 20-0 after one quarter and held a 28-0 advantage at halftime. PI senior running backs Marky Villarreal and Ralph Valdez gained 108 and 99 yards, respectively, and each ran for a TD. Villarreal also caught a 13-yard pass for a score.

On the season, Villarreal has gained 1,326 yards, while Valdez has run for 644 yards. They average 8.2 and 6.6 yards a carry, respectively.

PI quarterback Carr Grienier also enjoyed a productive night against West Oso as he completed five of seven passes for 129 yards and a pair of TDs. On the season, Grienier has hit on 46-of-95 passes for 764 yards and eight TDs along with four interceptions.

Defensively, the Tarpons gave up only 37 yards on the ground and 222 yards passing to West Oso with Clemente Valdez and Villarreal topping the tackle chart with seven stops each.

On the season, Matthew Sanchez (66), Esteban Delgadillo (61) and Frankie Espinosa (57) are the Tarpons’ leaders in tackles.
