Tarpons overwhelm Bears in playoff rout
Port Isabel jumps out to early lead en route to victory

KINGSVILLE - Mark Guess warned everyone before the game. Don't take Port Isabel High School lightly. A 4-6 record means nothing when discussing this year's edition of the Tarpons.

Unfortunately for Guess and his West Oso club, the Tarpons proved the Bears' coach to be pretty insightful.

The Tarpons slugged the Bears with three quick touchdowns and utilized big plays all night on the way to a 41-14 thumping in the opening round of the Class 3A Division II playoffs.

"We knew coming into the game, seeing them on film, we knew what these guys had," Guess said. "They're a very dangerous team, not the one that lost their first five games of the season."

Port Isabel (5-6) goes on to face either Devine or Goliad in the area round of the playoffs next week. The Bears close the season at 6-4.

Four of the six touchdowns the Tarpons scored covered at least 49 yards. Two TDs were defensive - fumble returns of 49 yards by Raul Villarreal and 8 yards by Frankie Espinosa, the latter coming on Oso's first possession of the second half.

"We came out ready to play. This is probably our best game of the year," Port Isabel coach Monty Stumbaugh said. "The kids played hard and that's what we had to do."

The Bears slumbered most of the night offensively, losing two of six fumbles and managing just 13 rushing yards on 29 attempts. West Oso finally gained some spark in the third quarter on touchdown receptions of 32 and 22 yards by Jose "Lino" Lopez. The first one came from quarterback and cousin P.J. Lopez and the second on a halfback pass from Dominique Whitehead.

Unfortunately, those scores were sandwiched around Mark Villarreal's second TD of the game, a 68-yard run. Villarreal finished with 107 rushing yards on 10 carries.

"I guess it was too little too late," Guess said. "I told them at halftime we've got to get a couple of stops and a couple scores. We got some scores but we gave up another defensive touchdown and that put us back down by four scores. We didn't have enough time."

The Bears were in a 14-0 hole less than seven minutes into the game. The Tarpons rolled 70 yards on the game's opening drive, moving equally as effective on the ground and through the air and also completing a fourth-down conversion. Carr Grienier completed his first three passes totaling 51 yards, the final 13 going to Villarreal, who was wide open on a swing pass.

After going three and out, Oso got a 55-yard punt from William Thomas, seemingly pinning Port Isabel at its 16. No matter. Ralph Valdez bolted through the middle eluded a tackler at the West Oso 25 and completed the 84-yard scoring run. Victor Ramirez's second point-after kick made it 14-0 with 5:27 remaining in the first quarter.

Port Isabel made it 20-0 four minutes later after Espinosa sacked Lopez for an 11-yard loss, forcing a fumble in the process. Raul Villarreal scooped the ball in stride and returned it 49 yards for the TD.

The Bears, who had 93 first-half yards, couldn't get any closer than the Port Isabel 33. Conversely, Port Isabel had 230 yards, but it didn't matter where the Tarpons started from scrimmage. After regaining possession with 1:14 remaining in the half, the Tarpons again struck quickly from their 24. Grienier lofted a pass to Manuel Gonzales, who caught the ball at the Oso 30, broke two tackles and completed the 76-yard scoring play. Grienier's 2-point conversion run gave Port Isabel the 28-0 halftime cushion.

"Their play is not what their record indicates," he said of the 4-6 Tarpons. "They've really gotten better each week." coach Mark Guess

Take I37 South from US77, exit Buddy Lawrence, go right. Straight down to Leopard St. You'll see the stadium. Come early, limited parking.

Javelina Staidum in Kingsville would have been better that Memorial or Cabanes Field in Corpus Christi because of parking situations. T-M stadium would have been a little better.

Thanks Sinton66 I will write this down for my hubby. Limited parking huh, ... that's right I remember, last time we played thier was in 1992 against Marble falls in the regional semi-finals, we had to park quite a ways from the stadium. Maybe I'll take the day off and hang out in CC for the afternoon till the game.
