While working on a project in Virginia some years back I made the trip to Appomattox, where Lee surrendered to Grant. As we stood in the reconstructed room where the surrender took place, the young park ranger who was guiding out tour stated " this is the room where our country was reunited". Being from from Texas and knowing that all of my ancestors of that era had fought for the confederacy, I told him that I had never heard Lee's surrender refered to that way.
Its strange how things work out. I sometimes wonder if our country would have been able to weather some of the storms that its been through during our short history, had we not reunited. Here in the United States when we honor our veterans, we honor them from both sides of the war between the states, because they were all Americans.
