my daughters class is doing a special program for Veterans Day tomorrow at school. She has really been learning alot of patriotic songs etc and last night she asked me why people wanted to be in the Army. It took me awhile to explain it to where she understood but I think she finally got it. She told me this morning that she s Proud to be an American. I am still smiling!

THE FINAL INSPECTION

The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass?
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, you soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"

The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, you soldier,
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

It's the Soldier, not the reporter
who has given us the freedom of the press.

It's the Soldier, not the poet,
who has given us the freedom of speech.

It's the Soldier, not the politicians
that ensures our right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

It's the Soldier who salutes the flag,
who serves beneath the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag.

If you care to offer the smallest token of recognition and appreciation for the Military, please pass this on and pray for our men and women who have served and are currently serving our country and pray for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

This is a really nice thread. All of us currently serving and past appreciate it. In my 17 1/2 years of doing my thing, I have seen a lot of folks do some great things in here. I still strive to even be in some of their shadows. I work with paratroopers everyday that some of them have truly done the deed. I have one kid in my office who was engaged with the enemy and had a grenade thrown at him and the guy opened up. Course, we kind of pick with him about how fast he moved.....LOL. I garauntee you there is no player with a faster 40 yard dash time than SGT Schular....LOL I have another who had an RPG shot at them while on Tower guard. My partner in crime at work (SFC Israel) was hit with an IED (roadside bomb) and the HUMMV glass blew out into his face. Luckily for him he had on his goggles. I was walking to the gym last week and saw one of our paratroopers in PT gear (sports gear) on crutches going to Ritz-Epps (the gym). It caught my eye because when I looked over there the guy was missing a leg. It might have been a Specialist (E-4) that we have here in the 82nd Airborne Division. I know we have one in the 82nd who is still in and missing his leg. He even deployed back to Afghanistan. I am not sure if it was him, but we still have a few around posts that are missing limbs but still continue to serve. Even though my time is coming down to the end in the military. I know I won't forget anytime soon why I have what I do. It's because of guys like that I am able to have all the things I take for granted everyday. I will tell you it is a true honor to have served this nation and met the folks I have through the years. I literally trust them with my life.

Boy I tell I would give anything to look and walk down Ardennes again and see the guys and gals doing Pt. Or to be standing there in my best BDU's waiting for some high official to officially open All American week and even though at the time we hated it,,, but the pride we had marching off that field ,,all 40,000 of us. You have never had a friend until you have spent 5 days in a small hole pouring down rain in Panama. Shared a MRE..and make it last two days between two men.....laugh your a$$ off one moment cause your so miserable then cry your eyes out the next for the same reason. Its hard to explain,,, the life you love to hate.....To all my fellow grunts, cannon cockers, REMFS, Legs, Chairbourn Rangers..Past and Prestent...GOD BLESS YOU...GOD BLESS YOUR FAMILIES.....GOD BLESS THE USA....man now i got to get this sand out of my eye:)

Bulldogbark this was the first year in 11 years of being in the 82nd I didn't march in it. However, since I am a SFC I got to do something that I thought was great. They took soldiers from the "Old Soldiers Home" and I got to escort them. I was pushing this old man in a wheelchair. I got to talking with him. He had pushed onto Omaha Beach in WW 2. He had recieved the Silver Star, 2 Bronze Stars and a purple heart. What that guy saw that day, I can't even phathom. I have been in conflicts in the past, but those WW 2 vets really did some great things. I really did feel that was one of the best All-American weeks I got to participate in.

I was. In '98 I was actually over at 307th Engineers. I was actually with the nasty at the time. Boy now there is some history with the 307th. (crossing of the waal river) They still every year hump the zodiacs and simulate the crossing for the few remaining surviving vets.

I was in Desert Storm in 1991 on the USNS Mercy in the Persian Gulf. My husband was attached to CHB-13 also in Desert Storm. We left 2 small children at the time to to and serve our country in the Navy. We could have been killed, but we wouldn't have done it any differently and we wouldn't change a thing. I am very proud of serving my country and I would do it again in a heart beat! I retired in 1998 and my husband in 2002. Thanks to all the other vets who served and we are serving now. God Bless the United States of America!

Only a select few can become soldiers....

Of those few, only a few can be good at what they do....

But they ALL are heroes....

Paratrooper I volenteered for what we called "hosting detail" and I was assigned to one of our first paratroopers in the experiment jump platoon,,, and I swear the more we talked about his life the more I couldnt move away...I though we had it bad some days,,,,,but those guys in WWI and WWII and Vietman,,,,wow man they didnt have all this modern stuff we had,,,they just had to do it on pure will to survive. I remember his name was PFC Leehman he was 80 something years old and but when he talked about his unit,, you could still see the fire in his eyes like he was still 16 years old ( he lied about his age to get in) I would call couple of times a year to talk some with him. then about 6 years ago PFC Leehman left this glorious Earth to be with his troops and the Great Jumpmaster in the SKy,,,, I often think of PFC Leehman and wonder if he is up there walking around spitting out curse words cause his parachute is too tight or his weapon is too heavy,,,,but I bet there is that fire in his eye..the fire of pride of what he was doing because of what he wanted to do. I salute you PVT Leehman job well done. sit back and relax now...we will take over your battle from here. Keep the drop zone light a blinking,,, so one day we can once again share our stories,

I certainly second this one. It kinda puts into perspective that someone probably is going to give their life tonight or their entire world is going to change as they are going to be seriously injured tomorrow while we all enjoy our games. Most never give a second thought to those names we will never know or a face we will never see who is serving in harms way tonight. Some of my friends are over there now, as well as some of you have either friends or family over there. I would certainly like it if everyone that reads this says just a small prayer for someone that you don't even know who believes in what they are doing for the United States whether you are for or against the war in Iraq.
