ABILENE, Texas - Ryan Hinojoza was solid in his first start at quarterback as Hardin-Simmons rolled past Austin College, 31-7, in American Southwest Conference football action Saturday afternoon at Shelton Stadium.

Hinojoza threw for a touchdown and completed 21-of-26 passes for 277 yards. Quinton Jones had his second straight game over 100 yards with 133 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries.

Jones put the Cowboys on the board in the first quarter with a 5-yard run that capped a 9-play, 75-yard drive at the 5:52 mark. Shane McCord's pat made it 7-0. McCord then gave HSU a 10-0 lead with a 32-yard field goal.

Hinojoza executed the perfect two-minute drill and found Jared May on a 13-yard touchdown pass with :20 remaining in the first half to make it 17-0. Hinojoza was 8-for-8 on the drive that went 10 plays and 85 yards in 2:31.

Jones scored on a 7-yard run to cap the first drive of the second half to make it 24-0. Taylor Adams put the Kangaroos on the board with 8:41 to go in the third on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Brian Womack.

Jones scored for the third time on an 8-yard run with 1:51 to go in the third quarter to make it 31-7. New second-string quarterback Mychal Carrillo saw his first snaps of the season at quarterback and led the Cowboys on what looked like two scoring drives. Scott Bryant missed a 31-yard field goal and Carrillo hit Pete Modica in the chest on fourth down in the end zone, but it fell to the ground.

Carrillo had a solid day at his normal slotback position. He caught five balls for 96 yards. He also ran four times for 34 yards and threw for 30 more. Jared May had 76 yards receiving on seven catches to move into seventh place on the career receiving charts with 111 catches. He also went over the 3,000-yard mark in all-purpose yards.

The defense was solid again allowing only 253 yards and seven points. Jermaine Walker had two sacks as the Cowboys once again used a group effort. HSU's offense rolled to 553 yards and 26 first downs.

The Cowboys are now 8-1 on the year and 7-1 in league play. HSU plays at Texas Lutheran next weekend. A win would give HSU the outright ASC title for the second straight year. Austin College fell to 1-8 on the year and 1-7 in league play.
