Carrillo is finalist for Wendy's Heisman honor

Wendy's announced Friday that Kendal Carrillo of Sweetwater had been selected as a 2005 finalist for its Texas High School Heisman award.

Carrillo, a senior at Sweetwater High School, was one of 18 state finalists - nine boys and nine girls - selected from more than 14,000 nominees nationwide. He will receive a bronze medal.

Leigh Berger of Weimar High School and Trevor Hybner of Shiner Catholic School-St. Paul were the two statewide winners of the annual award that celebrates high school seniors who excel in athletics, scholarship and citizenship.

Joining Carrillo, who currently plays for the Mus-tang football team, as the other Texas finalists were Mary Lawless of Scottsville, Ashley Murrah of Covington, Jaqi Tice of Alvord, Loren Hodges of Paradise, Krystal Sherman of Decatur, Brandi Womack of Nocona, Katie Metzler of Gainesville, Lenae Boykin of Meridian, Sara Kaska of Abbott, Timothy Smith of Hempstead, Brendon Kelso of Jacksboro, Cory Multer of Garden City, Andrew Shea of Corpus Christi, Tanner Woods of Follett, William Kempf of Castroville, Blake Brooks of Waco and Chance Bingham of Matador.

Students are judged by a panel that includes past Wendy's High School Heisman winners as well as leaders in education, business, athletics and commu-nity service. The Texas winners join two winners from each state and the District of Columbia to compete in the next round of the competition where 12 national finalists - a male and a female from six re-gions - will be selected.

National finalists will be announced in mid-Nov-ember, and the national winners will be named in December in conjuction with the collegiate Heisman presentation that will be televised on ESPN.
