Leopards face final tuneup for playoffs

By MARVIN HOGAN, Register Sports Editor

All may not be what it seems during a football game. Such was the case during the Gainesville Leopards 55-0 drumming of Pottsboro, Oct. 29, in Pottsboro. The Leopards, now 8-0 on the season and 4-0 in district play, were ahead 55-0 when they appeared to try an onside kick. “That is not what we were trying to do at all,” Gainesville coach Jeff Cordell said Tuesday morning. “We had Kolby Kuykendall (A Linebacker) kicking off and he just missed the ball,” Cordell said. “The tee went farther then the ball did,” he said. Cordell said the went to the officials and asked to talk to Pottsboro coach Jim Verden. “I slowed the game down a bit,” he said, “and talked to their coach and explained the situation.” Cordell said he main concern was to make sure the Pottsboro staff didn't think he was trying to run up the score. “We want to be a class organization,” Cordell said, “and have the players and coaches act with class.”

As far as the game was concerned, it was the proverbial same song, second verse. It was the second week in succession that the Leopards played a team with no chance to make the playoffs. They defeated Whitesboro, before meeting Pottsboro. The Leopards, still ranked number seven in the state Associated Press football poll, are just trying to play well, while moving toward the playoffs. Though the bi-district playoff foe is not determined, the site of the contest is set. The game will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at Wichita Falls' Memorial Stadium.

Getting back to the Pottsboro game, Cordell said he was pleased with the way his team performed. “We played well, across the board,” he said. “Our main focus was to keep improving and not take a step back as a team,” On thing that was troubling the Leopards, though, is being able to throw the ball down the field. “We are still having trouble with that,” Cordell said. “We look good in practice, but not in games. It seems like when we threw the ball more than 25 yards down the field, we get an interception.” The Leopards used a lot of players against Pottsboro, and Cordell said he was pleased that the level of play didn't drop. Cordell said the entire team was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. Chris Krebs and Ryan Walker were named offensive MVP, while Leland Brown took the defensive award. Trey Blaylock was awarded the special teams MVP award.

The Jackrabbits still have some hop left -- It will be senior night this Friday at Leeper Stadium and Cordell said Bowie would like nothing better than to come in and beat the Leopards. “If I have it figured right, the Gainesville coach said, “they have no chance to make the playoffs.” Cordell said Pilot Point and Sanger will take the other two playoff spots. “They (Bowie) would like nothing better than to come in and beat us and spoil our senior night,” he said. Bowie is 4-5 on the season and 2-2 in district play. “This is only their second season in District 6-3A, but they have established themselves as one of the better teams in the district.” Cordell said Bowie quarterback Brandon Workman, is 6-4 and weighes 187 pounds. “We will have to keep him bottled up, when they have the ball,” he said. Cordell said that tailback Marty Renteria (5-7, 165) has very good speed and the Leopard defense has to stop him to be successful. Defensively, Cordell said the Heath Myers (5-11, 180) is a good free safety. “He comes up and makes a lot of tackles,” he said. “He makes a lot more than most players at that position. The Gainesville coach said middle linebacker Bear Treadaway (6-1, 170) is good at pass coverage.

why the heck do you have the LB kicking off in the first place? It's one thing when you are up big to let put him in at FB in a goalline situation...but on a kickoff??? hmm...

He is the backup kicker, he plays for the soccer team too and normally has done a good job kicking before this game

I figured so but when the quote is like "yeah we had the LB kicking off and he whiffed it"...that just doesn't sound too nice.
