View Full Version : Size does not matter

The size of the school does not determine performance. Some big ones do not perform well. Some of the smaller ones perform great. Here is the evidence.

Name of school (enrollment) , season record, district record, (Harris Rating)

Big 'un's
Wichita Falls Hirschi (899) 0-10, 0-4 (#174)
Palestine (899) 6-2, 3-1 (#22)
Tyler Chapel Hill (888) 2-7, 1-3 (#69)
West Orange Stark (884) 8-0, 4-0 (#2)
Bandera (877) 4-5, 1-3 (#100)
Decatur (877) 7-2, 4-0 (#24)
Levelland (877) 3-7, 2-2 (#130)
Navasota (877) 3-6, 1-4 (#99)
Sillsbee (876) 4-3, 4-0 (#55)
Quinlan Ford (874) 0-8, 0-3 (#163)

Those lacking size
Carrollton Ranchview (361) 1-8, 1-3 (#132)
Halletsville (390) 6-2, 3-1 (#54)
Tatum (392) 8-0, 3-0 (#9)
Cotulla (395) 6-3, 2-2 (#176)
Eustace (397) 4-5, 0-3 (#165)
Farmersville (399) 3-6, 2-2 (#133)
White Oak (399) 4-5, 1-2 (#87)
Altair Rice Consolidated (401) 8-0, 4-0 (#29)
Gladewater Sabine (404) 1-8, 1-2 (#122)
Pottsboro (408) 0-9, 0-4 (#177)

When the realignments come out it February, just remember these age old truths:

It is not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the fight in the dog

and

It's not the size of the ship in the water
it's the motion in the ocean

There are exceptions to every rule, GWood. However, IMO, if you polled all the coaches, I bet they would tell you that they have a better chance of fielding a winning team if they have more kids to choose from. If this were not true, there would be no basis for the classifications.

merkel is a small 3A but bigger thatn most 2A schools but they still got beat really bad in the predistrict schedule this year!!......sweetwater is also not a big 3A team but we are beating teams that are of very good size for 3A........your right...size does not matter...until we start talking about WYLIE!!!..........not hating though..wylie is a very good team...hope they win state again this year!!!

Good example-- San Angelo Central Bobcats. Campus population of over 3000, yet they can't field a winning team. (granted they have had a few good years, but with those kind of numbers you would expect a lot more.)

The only logical way to look at this is by asking:

If every UIL classification played the one just below it, do you think the percentage of winners would be "bigger" schools or "smaller" schools? I think the bigger schools would have a much better winning %.

its like Bull' says : of course there are exceptions, but, in general, the larger schools do perform better over a given time ...

Small 3A schools should be larger than all 2A schools, but the difference in 40-50 kids between 2A and 3A shouldn't make a lot difference. Tradition, athletes and coaching determining how well the 2A's and 3A's compete against the bigger schools.

that COULD be a good example ---- they are not necessarily bigger than the teams they are playing ... thats what you need to look at.

Example - Wylie is a big 3A school but if they went 0-5 in non-district against all 4A you cant say they are not perfmoring well but they are a big 3A school. (well you could but it would not be accurate)

all depends on the competition

some needs lots of motion in the ocean to make up for the small size of the ship......;)

I know. Just trying to remark that with as many students as they have you would think they could find at least a few decent athletes to field a team with.

I agree.(look at my quote) But the larger the student body the more you can select from. That doesn't gurantee that you'll be great or even win. But when you have alot to choose from it helps.

As a coach, I'd rather work at a smaller school with football tradition, where the kids grow up dreaming of the day they'll get to buckle up their chinstrap for a varsity game...expecting to beat the hell out of the opposition VS. a larger school with absolutely no football tradition, where the kids grow up dreaming of the day they'll be marching on the field at half-time tooting their little horn. It makes me sick to my stomach. Welcome to my nightmare.

....not if they don't come out. you need to either already have football tradition established at your school, or a very special group of kids who are leaders, looking to build that tradition. Trust me...I'm livin' it right now.

Anyone else get a chuckle at the title of this post?

Another factor is how well did the teams do in the playoffs.

Thanks you two. The whole thread was tongue in cheek. Sometimes everyone is way too serious.

Yes, I know that the 1A schools would not have a chance with the weakest of 5A schools.
