The news wasn't quite as painful as it could have been for the Marlin Bulldogs.

Senior quarterback Jeremy Sanders, a first-team Super Centex star and a blue-chip recruiting prospect, suffered a separated shoulder in the Bulldogs' 53-26 rout of Groesbeck last Friday, an injury that should keep him out no later than the area round of the playoffs, Marlin coach Jerry Malone said.

“He could be back in two weeks,” Malone said. “It was a slight separation, a Grade 2 separation, and the doctors and trainers have told us he could be back in time for the playoff opener. With his toughness, I wouldn't be surprised.”

With the victory over Groesbeck, Marlin wrapped up its regular season, a fortutitous gift from the scheduling gods.

That bye week couldn't have fallen any better for us,” Malone admitted.

Senior Kevin Diles stepped into Sanders' colossal cleats last Friday and tossed a pair of touchdown passes and ran for another score despite not practicing at the position in the week leading up to the game.

“Kevin did a great job, especially after not getting any reps,” Malone said. “You never want to lose a guy like J-Mo (Sanders), but we were glad that Kevin stepped up.”

Malone said that Diles will receive all the reps in practice leading up to the playoff opener against Marlin's yet-to-be-determined District 17-3A foe, while Sanders rests and recuperates. Sanders leads Central Texas in total offense with 2,783 yards and has accounted for 37 touchdowns.

Marlin's win over the Goats was its 37th consecutive district victory over the past eight years. That's the second-longest active streak in the state behind El Paso Riverside's 39-game run, and ranks second all-time in Central Texas history behind Temple's 43-game district streak from 1976-80.
