1. USC (8-0)

2. Texas (8-0)
W, at Oklahoma State 47-28
next game: at Baylor
If you’re going just on merit, the first half against an awful Oklahoma State team should drop the Longhorns to number three. However, the second half against the Cowboys showed how good Texas is when it tries. Even so, if the Hokies blow out Miami, how do you keep them at three?

3. Virginia Tech (8-0)
4. Alabama (8-0)
5. Notre Dame (5-2)
6. LSU (6-1)
7. Penn State (8-1)
8. Ohio State (6-2)
9. Miami (6-1)
10. UCLA (8-0)
11. Florida State (7-1)
12. Auburn (6-2)
13. Florida (6-2)
14. Georgia (7-1)

15. Texas Tech (7-1)
W, Baylor 28-0
next game: Texas A&M
Having problems with Baylor is nothing to be ashamed of anymore. With Texas A&M looking horrific against Iowa State, only the Oklahoma game might provide a chance for a semi-decent win on the résumé.

16. Boston College (6-2)
17. Wisconsin (8-1)
18. Michigan (6-3)
19. Colorado (6-2)
20. West Virginia (6-1)
21. Oregon (7-1)
22. Northwestern (5-3)
23. South Carolina (5-3)
24. Minnesota (5-3)

25. TCU (8-1)
W, at San Diego State 23-20
next game: Colorado State
Is everyone supposed to get excited about a close win at San Diego State? The Mountain West is simply too average for TCU to make any big strides, but it’ll get a huge battle against Colorado State in the game for the league title.

26. Michigan State (5-3)
27. Iowa State (5-3)
28. Iowa (5-3)
29. Louisville (5-2)

I know A&M beat Baylor and all, but there's no way the Aggies should be ranked above the Bears. While they've made strides in the right direction A&M seems to be backpedaling.

Texas should not be number 3. They haven't lost. What matters is the final score.
