If D-30 is still done the same way as it was in 2001, then Goliad is also in... and there's an 75% chance they'll wind up as the #2 seed.

District 32-3A notes: Already set for the playoffs

By BUDDY GREEN
Valley Morning Star

It rarely happens, but the District 32-3A playoff teams are already set with one week left.

Rio Hondo clinched the district title with a perfect 6-0 mark and the Bobcats now have an off-week to heal their wounded.

The Cats will take on the loser of the West Oso-Orange Grove game in bi-district.

Rio Hondo will play in the small school bracket.

The winner of the West Oso-Orange Grove game takes on Port Isabel.

In the big school bracket, Hidalgo will meet Zapata.

Hidalgo is 4-1 in district and closes out the regular season against Lyford on Friday.

PI is 3-2 and the Tarpons will be a prohibitive favorite to beat Progreso on Friday.

With a win on Friday PI would enter the playoffs with a 4-6 record. Not a typical Tarpon season but still good enough to qualify.

Surprises, disappointments

After winning just four games last season and only two in district, Rio Hondo has to be the surprise team of the year in 32-3A.

Second-year head coach Gus Cavazos has the 'Cats playing their best ball when it counts. The only blemish on Rio Hondo's record was a non-district loss to Brownsville St. Joe in Week Two.

Disappointments go out to La Feria and Lyford.

La Feria, a perennial playoff club, can do no better than finish 3-3 with a win over Raymondville on Friday. The Lions were tough on defense, as usual, but couldn't get enough offense to turn the tide.

Lyford, considered a heavy favorite in preseason to make a third straight trip to the playoffs, started out strong but faltered badly down the stretch. A 42-6 loss to La Feria last Friday emphasized the Bulldogs fall.

Big-play Manny

La Feria's Manny Perez, slowed by injuries earlier in the season, had his breakout game against Lyford.

Perez, a senior tailback, rushed for 95 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries. On defense Perez recorded two sacks and six tackles and had two interceptions. Both picks led to TD runs by Perez.

The Lions also got a look at the future with sophomore quarterback Eleazar Esquivel, who completed six of 10 attempts for 180 yards and a touchdown.

Best kept secret

He doesn't get much ink, but Santa Rosa running back Harvey Flores has put together a fine season for the Class 2A playoff-bound Warriors.

In a 34-22 win over Bishop last Friday, Flores rushed for 266 yards and one TD. He also caught five passes for 106 yards and a score. Flores had an 80-yard TD run and broke a screen pass for a 62-yard TD.

On the year, Flores has 1,560 yards and 16 TDs.

With Santa Rosa headed for the playoffs, Flores may have a shot at the exclusive 2,000-yard club.
